Ronald Acuña Jr. delivered the kind of swing that can flip a game and, in this case, swing a division race.
With the Braves trailing by three in the eighth inning at Citizens Bank Park, Acuña launched a three-run homer to wipe out a 4-1 deficit and set up a 5-4 comeback win over the Phillies. Austin Riley finished the job in the ninth with an RBI triple that scored Ozzie Albies, who had opened the inning with a double.
The victory gave Atlanta a five-game lead in the NL East and at least preserved the edge it carried into the series if the Braves drop Monday afternoon’s finale.
Acuña was right in the middle of everything. He finished with four RBIs, matching his season high, and added a sacrifice fly earlier in the game.
The homer was his 16th of the year and may have been his biggest yet. Mike Yastrzemski and Drake Baldwin helped create the moment by reaching base - Yastrzemski with a walk and Baldwin with a single - before Acuña stepped in as the tying run and punished Philadelphia.
It was the latest sign that Acuña’s bat is heating up after a season that has not matched the expectations around him. He has hits in eight of his last nine games, with four straight multi-hit efforts and six multi-hit games over that stretch. In those nine games, he’s 17-for-34 with three doubles, two homers, six runs and seven RBIs.
The finish belonged to Raisel Iglesias, who had to sweat a little before locking it down. Bryson Stott opened the bottom of the ninth with a single, then moved to third with one out after a groundout and a passed ball. Iglesias shut the door from there, getting Bryan De La Cruz to line out to short and striking out Edmundo Sosa on three pitches for his 31st save.
The Braves had spent much of the afternoon digging out of an early mess. They fell behind 2-0 in the first after Mauricio Dubón’s throwing error wiped out what looked like a possible 6-4-3 double play. That mistake turned into two unearned runs, with a Luis Arraez sacrifice fly and Alec Bohm’s two-out RBI double putting the Phillies in front.
Tyler Mahle kept Atlanta from falling further behind. Philadelphia threatened again in the next two innings, including a situation with runners on the corners and one out in the third, but Mahle escaped and settled in from there.
He retired the last 11 batters he faced and finished with two unearned runs allowed on four hits over six innings, with three strikeouts and no walks. His ERA through six starts with the Braves now sits at 1.24.
Atlanta chipped away in the sixth when Acuña drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but the Braves also left chances on the table in the middle innings, which made it look like Mahle might take a tough-luck loss.
Then the seventh inning made things look even worse. Derek Hill and Kyle Schwarber each hit solo homers, stretching Philadelphia’s lead and putting the Braves in a deeper hole.
Aaron Nola had been dealing most of the night for the Phillies. He carried a perfect game into the fourth and ended up allowing one run on four hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking one.
Philadelphia’s bullpen, though, couldn’t hold it together. Rookie Alex McFarlane blew his first career save by allowing all three runs in the eighth, and closer Jhoan Duran took the loss after surrendering the run in the ninth.
Dylan Lee earned the win for Atlanta with a scoreless eighth in his first appearance since Aug. 31.
