Ronald Acuna Jr. got a home run Thursday that even he seemed to have trouble believing.
The Atlanta Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the Miami Marlins before rain sent the game into a delay, and Acuna’s two-run shot in the bottom of the third accounted for every run on the board at that point. The swing sent a ball deep to left-center, and for a moment it looked like Miami had done enough to keep it in the park.
Instead, the play unraveled in a hurry. Marlins outfielders Heriberto Hernandez and Esteury Ruiz collided, the ball glanced off one of their gloves, and it bounced over the wall. Acuna was left standing at first base in disbelief before the realization hit and he celebrated the homer.
It would usually look like a ground-rule double if a ball bounces over the fence, but this one never hit the ground. That made it a home run for the nine-year veteran, his 10th of the season.
The bigger picture for Acuna has still been a tough one. Thursday was just his 63rd game of the year, after two separate hamstring strains cost him extended time. Even with the injury interruptions, he has still shown the kind of impact the Braves count on when he’s in the lineup.

Through 231 at-bats, including his work in Thursday’s game, Acuna has 56 hits, 10 home runs and 17 RBIs. Once the rain delay ends, he’ll get another chance to add to those numbers and keep helping Atlanta in its playoff push.
