The Phillies are heading into the NL Wild Card round without one of their biggest trade deadline additions. Luis Arraez will not be on the roster against the Atlanta Braves after an ankle injury in the final week of the season left his postseason availability in doubt.
Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported the decision, and the club is turning to Otto Kemp instead. The Phillies are also sticking with three catchers on the roster.
“Luis Arraez will not be on the Wild Card Series roster,” Gelb reports. “Otto Kemp is on.
Phillies will go with three catchers still. They had several injuries in minors that depleted depth.”
Arraez’s absence continues an unwanted pattern for Philadelphia. For the third straight season, a major deadline pickup won’t be fully available in the postseason. Austin Hays in 2024, Harrison Bader in 2025, and now Arraez in 2026 have all missed time in October for the Phillies.
Kemp gives the Phillies a bench option who can hit right-handed and potentially fill in for someone like Brandon Marsh or Justin Crawford. He’s had encouraging moments in the majors, but plenty of rough ones too, and he isn’t expected to start.
Philadelphia isn’t bringing up anyone else, either. Gabriel Rincones Jr. and Felix Reyes are both hurt and won’t factor into the postseason roster.
That leaves the Phillies with J.T. Realmuto, Rafael Marchan, and Garrett Stubbs as their three catchers.
Arraez’s injury likely would have sent him to the injured list in a normal season, so the move doesn’t come as a shock. He could still be in play for the NLDS if the Phillies advance, but for now he’s out of the Wild Card mix.
