Max Scherzer, the seasoned pitcher with two World Series titles under his belt, remains a free agent, waiting for the right opportunity to land on his feet. While Justin Verlander has found his way back to the Detroit Tigers, Scherzer and a handful of other experienced arms are still on the market. Scherzer has made it clear that he's ready to sign with a team, even if it means joining after Opening Day.
The Toronto Blue Jays, having recently signed Cody Ponce, seem unlikely to reunite with Scherzer. Meanwhile, big-market teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, and Phillies have already fortified their rotations with top-tier talent, leaving Scherzer with limited options. The Tigers, having secured Verlander, are not in the market for another veteran pitcher.
However, the Atlanta Braves emerge as a potential landing spot for Scherzer. With injuries impacting their rotation-Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep are both sidelined with surgeries-the Braves are in need of a reliable starter. Scherzer’s experience and leadership could be invaluable for Atlanta, making him an ideal fit to bolster their pitching staff.
A one-year deal could be mutually beneficial, providing Scherzer with a platform to showcase his skills while giving the Braves a seasoned ace to guide their rotation. While negotiating a high-paying contract might be challenging at this stage, a minimal one-year contract could serve both parties well.
Though Scherzer's options are dwindling, the Braves' need for pitching depth presents a promising opportunity. The veteran pitcher remains hopeful, and the chance to join a competitive team like the Braves could be just around the corner.
