JR Ritchie just turned in the kind of outing that makes a prospect file look even better. The Atlanta Braves right-hander punched out 15 batters for Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday, setting a new professional career high and leaving the Stripers with a 5-2 win over the Charlotte Knights.
Ritchie worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while piling up the strikeouts. It was a huge jump from his previous bests this season and in his career - he had struck out eight in a game earlier in April, and his old personal high was 11, which he reached last August.
The performance also put his name in the Gwinnett record book. Ritchie set the franchise mark for strikeouts in a game, another notable checkpoint in a season that has already included his MLB debut.
The 2022 first-round pick has bounced between Triple-A and the majors throughout 2026. In 15 starts at Gwinnett, he has posted a 3.30 ERA with 80 strikeouts across 76 1/3 innings.
With Atlanta, he has logged a 4.50 ERA in 14 appearances, eight of them starts, and has struck out 53 batters in 58 innings. He also picked up his first career save.
Atlanta has called on him more than once this year, including a start in early August, but his next big-league chance this season is not clear. The Braves currently sit five games up in the National League East, and if they wrap up the division, Ritchie could be part of the mix down the stretch if the club chooses to ease some of its other pitchers.
For now, though, Sunday was another reminder of why he remains one of Atlanta’s most intriguing arms heading toward 2026. He’ll try to close out the year strong and keep pushing toward a spot in the Braves’ Opening Day rotation next spring.
