Carlos Carrasco Leads Braves in Grapefruit League Opener Against Rays

Veteran Carlos Carrasco takes the mound for the Braves spring opener, showcasing a blend of seasoned talent and fresh faces as preseason action heats up.

The Atlanta Braves are gearing up for Grapefruit League action against the Tampa Bay Rays at Charlotte Sports Park. With a mix of seasoned vets and fresh faces, there's plenty to watch as the Braves kick off their spring training.

Taking the mound is Carlos Carrasco, a right-hander with a wealth of experience. While his recent ERA of 6.36 since 2023 might raise eyebrows, his veteran presence could still be a stabilizing force for the Braves' pitching lineup.

Fans will also get a first look at some of the Braves' offseason additions. Outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, catcher Jonah Heim, and infielder Jorge Mateo are set to make their spring debuts. Utility player Eli White is also slated to see some action, adding depth and versatility to the roster.

The Braves face some challenges with injuries to pitchers Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep. This opens the door for Bryce Elder and Joey Wentz to vie for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Both are out of minor-league options, so there's a lot riding on their performances. With a grueling 13-game streak to start the season, the Braves might even consider a six-man rotation to keep arms fresh.

In the wings are Carrasco and Martin Perez, the latter signed to a minor-league deal. Either could be called up, but roster adjustments would be necessary.

On the prospect front, shortstop John Gil is one to watch. He’ll be coming off the bench in Saturday's game.

Gil impressed last year, slashing .252/.348/.714 and swiping 50 bases in the minors. At just 19, he's drawing comparisons to former Braves standout Rafael Furcal.

For fans eager to catch the action, the Braves and Gray Media have expanded their spring training broadcasts. Fifteen preseason games will be available across 26 markets, kicking off with a matchup against the Minnesota Twins at CoolToday Park.

This season promises to be an exciting one for Braves fans, with a blend of veteran leadership and youthful potential setting the stage for an intriguing spring training.
