Braves Triumph Despite Giving Up Five Homers in Spring Win Over Twins

Braves showcase explosive first inning and precise pitching to edge out Twins in a thrilling Spring Training showdown.

Spring Training often brings its fair share of quirks, and Monday's matchup between the Braves and the Twins was a perfect example. The Braves edged out a 9-8 victory, despite surrendering five home runs. While the Braves' pitchers managed an impressive 12/0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, the absence of any home runs on their side turned the game into a curious statistical footnote.

The game kicked off with a bang for the Braves, who sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning against Zebby Matthews. A series of bloop hits led to an explosive eight-run inning, highlighted by Drake Baldwin's second hit of the frame. Matt Olson, despite making two outs, was part of an offensive display that left Matthews, a hopeful for the Twins' rotation in light of Pablo Lopez's absence, struggling to catch a break.

After that offensive surge, the Twins took control, though mostly against players not expected to play major roles for Atlanta this season. Carlos Carrasco allowed two home runs over 2 2/3 innings but kept his walks at zero. The Braves’ bullpen held steady until Hayden Harris gave up another homer, despite striking out three in his inning.

The game tightened up due to undrafted free agent Trent Buchanan, who was tagged for two more Twins homers while recording just two outs. Adam Maier then stepped in, needing only one pitch to seal the win.

In terms of hitting, the Braves had just one barreled ball compared to the Twins' eight. Yet, there were standout performances, with Austin Riley going 3-for-3 and Mauricio Dubon adding a 2-for-3 effort, including a double to the track. Eli White and Drake Baldwin also contributed with a couple of hits each.

All in all, it was a Spring Training game that delivered a mix of excitement and unpredictability, reminding us why this time of year is both fun and a little wild.
