Atlanta’s bullpen picture got a little clearer Wednesday, with Robert Suarez moving another step toward a return and Bailey Falter back on the active roster.
Braves manager Walt Weiss said Suarez is expected to face live hitters early next week, which usually marks the last hurdle before a rehab assignment. If that assignment is short, Suarez could be back with the club before the postseason opens Sept. 29.
That would be a welcome boost for a pitcher Atlanta signed to a three-year, $45 million deal last offseason. Suarez had been one of the team’s steadiest relievers before right elbow inflammation shut him down June 23.
He hasn’t pitched since June 19, but when he was on the mound, the results were dominant: 32 innings, a 0.56 ERA. He started throwing again during the third week of July, around the All-Star break, though his recovery hit a setback along the way.
The Braves also made a bullpen move, recalling left-hander Bailey Falter and designating right-hander Elieser Hernández for assignment.
Atlanta landed Falter and outfielder Lane Thomas in an Aug. 2 trade with the Royals. Falter’s last major league outing came for Kansas City on May 26. Before the deal, he logged 17 appearances for Triple-A Omaha, including seven starts, and went 2-1 with a 3.35 ERA in 43 innings.
Since arriving at Triple-A Gwinnett, Falter has been sharp. He has made seven appearances, one of them a start, and hasn’t allowed a run in 10.1 innings while striking out 11.
Hernández’s run with the Braves was brief. He gave up two solo homers over two innings in Tuesday’s loss to the Rays.
The club also updated Bryce Elder’s status, officially placing the right-hander on the 15-day injured list and activating Reynaldo López in time for his start against Tampa Bay.
Elder had knee surgery Tuesday in Dallas and is expected to miss three to four weeks. That timeline points to a possible return around the start of the National League Wild Card Series or Division Series.
With Elder out, Atlanta will keep rolling with a six-man rotation: Chris Sale, Tyler Mahle, Grant Holmes, AJ Smith-Shawver, Martín Pérez and Reynaldo López. The setup is meant to give the starters extra rest as the postseason approaches.
