The Braves are making waves with their latest roster decision, as Didier Fuentes, a promising 20-year-old right-hander, has secured a spot on their Opening Day lineup. After debuting last season with Atlanta, Fuentes is set to take on a relief role, adding depth and versatility to the bullpen.
Fuentes’ transition to the bullpen helps clarify the Braves’ rotation setup. With Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, Spencer Strider, and Grant Holmes locked into the top four spots, the battle for the fifth starter position is down to Bryce Elder and Jose Suarez. Fuentes, meanwhile, will bolster the bullpen, while top prospect JR Ritchie heads to the minors, and Martin Perez remains with the organization but won't be on the Opening Day roster.
Injuries to Spencer Schwellenbach, Hurston Waldrep, and Joey Wentz have highlighted Atlanta’s rotation depth issues this spring. This situation has opened opportunities for pitchers like Fuentes to make their mark.
And make his mark he did-Fuentes delivered a stellar performance in the Grapefruit League, pitching nine flawless innings with 17 strikeouts, allowing no walks or hits. His only blemish was a hit-by-pitch, narrowly missing a perfect spring outing.
Fuentes could still find himself in a starting role if the Braves opt for a six-man rotation during their grueling start to the season, which features 13 consecutive games before their first off-day on April 9. Even if he remains in the bullpen, Fuentes’ ability to handle multiple innings will be invaluable during this stretch.
Throughout his minor league career, Fuentes has been primarily a starter, with 48 of his 52 games in that role. Last season, he navigated three minor league levels and a brief stint with the Braves, where he struggled with a 13.85 ERA. However, that experience may have been a case of too much too soon, as injuries forced the Braves to dig deep into their roster.
Fuentes has consistently demonstrated his strikeout prowess and control in the minors. Despite a 3.73 ERA over 202 2/3 innings that might not jump off the page, his potential is undeniable.
His impressive spring stats suggest that he could excel as a reliever. While injuries may have accelerated his rise last year, the Braves have shown confidence in promoting prospects who can make an immediate impact, and Fuentes looks ready to seize the moment.
