The Braves are giving their lineup a fresh look Tuesday night as they open their series against the Rays, with Michael Harris II moving back into the leadoff spot for the first time since Aug. 23.
Atlanta is hoping the shuffle can help jump-start the offense. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson will hit second and third, while Drake Baldwin drops to fourth and will serve as the DH with Sean Murphy back behind the plate. Mauricio Dubón is set to return at shortstop and bat fifth, and Mike Yastrzemski will start in left field and hit eighth against a right-handed starter.
Tampa Bay is making a few changes of its own. Liam Hicks is back in the cleanup spot after sitting out of the lineup Sunday, and Jorge Mateo, who began the season in Atlanta, will start at short and hit ninth for the opener.
The pitching matchup comes with a small sample size on one side and a much bigger one on the other. Only five current Rays have a major league at-bat against Braves starter AJ Smith-Shawver, but they’ve done solid work in those limited chances, going 5-for-10 as a group. Hicks has led the way at 2-for-2, and that collection also includes a homer, a double, three RBIs, three strikeouts and two walks.
Atlanta’s lineup has seen Freddy Peralta far more often, though the results have been modest. Braves hitters are 31-for-140 (.221) against the right-hander, with eight doubles, four home runs, 12 RBIs, 40 strikeouts and 12 walks.
Harris has handled Peralta well, going 4-for-9. Olson and Austin Riley have each hit over .300 against him, and both have two homers apiece along with a combined eight RBIs.
One more matchup stands out: Lane Thomas, the right-handed side of the Braves’ platoon in left field, has a stronger history against Peralta than Yastrzemski does. Thomas is 3-for-9 with two doubles and two RBIs against him, while Yastrzemski is 1-for-13 (.077) lifetime versus the Milwaukee right-hander.
