Braves Send A Clear Message With Latest Catching Move

The Braves bolster their Triple-A lineup and catching depth by signing Chuckie Robinson after his release from the Dodgers.

The Braves have added another catcher to the organizational mix, signing Chuckie Robinson to a minor league deal and plugging him into the lineup tonight for Triple-A Gwinnett.

Robinson lands in Atlanta about a week after the Dodgers let him go. That move came at the same time Los Angeles signed Chadwick Tromp, a catcher who has often served as Atlanta depth in recent seasons.

Robinson’s return to the Braves organization isn’t exactly a cold introduction, either. Atlanta claimed him off waivers from the Dodgers last September and carried him through the end of the regular season before outrighting him at the start of the offseason.

That opened the door for him to go back to the Dodgers on a minor league contract.

The 31-year-old has already seen a little bit of big league time with Los Angeles this year, but the results were rough. Robinson went 2-23 in eight MLB games. Over parts of four major league seasons, he owns a .124/.157/.176 line.

At Triple-A, though, the bat has looked more usable. Robinson carries a .264/.330/.408 slash line at that level.

Atlanta is clearly betting more on the glove and the way he handles a staff than on what he brings offensively. Robinson has now had multiple runs in the Dodgers organization and now another with the Braves. He joins Sandy León and Maverick Handley at Gwinnett as non-roster depth behind Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy in case the club needs another catcher.

Braves Add Catching Insurance As Offensive Frustration Keeps Growing

The Braves have been searching for a way to steady things while their offense keeps sputtering, and the recent skid has only sharpened that need. After dropping four of their last five, including a 4-1 loss to the Twins, Atlanta made a roster move at Triple-A by releasing veteran first baseman Carlos Santana, a reminder that the organization is still trying to sort through depth and production as the season wears on.

At the same time, the club quietly added another layer behind its primary catchers by bringing in Chuckie Robinson on a minor league deal. Robinson arrives with big league experience after being recently released by the Dodgers, giving Atlanta another veteran name to keep in the system while it looks for answers elsewhere in the lineup. The move is not the kind that changes the mood by itself, but it does show the Braves are still filling in cracks wherever they can find them. [Read more 🡒]

Braves Fans Just Got A Painful Reminder About Max Fried

Max Fried spent eight seasons as one of the most important pitchers in Atlanta, piling up accolades and helping anchor the rotation during the Braves 2021 World Series run. When he left for the Yankees after the 2024 season, it ended a long run that had made him a familiar and trusted face for Braves fans, even if the front office knew the next chapter would come with some risk attached.

Now the early returns in New York have brought that risk back into focus. Fried has been sidelined again by elbow trouble, a development that feels uncomfortably familiar to anyone who watched his Braves tenure closely, because arm issues and Tommy John surgery were already part of his history. It is the sort of reminder Atlanta cant help but notice, especially with the decision not to match New Yorks offer looking a little more understandable in hindsight. [Read more 🡒]
