Jim Jarvis and Brewer Hicklen have given the Braves a timely lift, but their recent run may be running straight into a roster squeeze.
Both players doubled in the eighth inning Wednesday night as Atlanta beat the Padres in a much-needed win. That kind of production wasn’t exactly on the radar in March, but since arriving in Atlanta, Jarvis and Hicklen have turned into useful spark plugs.
Jarvis has stood out most of all. He’s shown real growth and is playing like someone who has no plans to give up the starting shortstop job anytime soon. Even so, the Braves may not have much room to keep rewarding that kind of play once a pair of key pieces are ready to come back.
Ronald Acuña Jr. is getting closer. He reinjured his hamstring in early June, and Wednesday marked his third straight rehab game, a notable step that puts his return to Atlanta on the doorstep.
Ha-Seong Kim isn’t far behind. The $20 million shortstop has had a rough 2026, but reports from Gwinnett say he’s starting to find more consistent hard contact during his rehab assignment.
If Acuña Jr. and Kim are back this weekend, Jarvis and Hicklen could be the players most affected. That doesn’t mean they’ll be the exact roster moves, but it does mean their playing time could shrink fast.
The bigger danger for the 26-man roster may fall on Jorge Mateo, Dominic Smith, and Eli White. All three are in jeopardy when RAJ and HSK return, especially if Jarvis and Hicklen keep producing every chance they get. In these situations, the players with minor league options left are usually the ones who get squeezed out.
The Braves’ front office now has a decision to make over the next 24 hours: keep the depth intact, or trim the roster to fit the most productive and balanced group possible.
