Braves Rival Suddenly Faces An Injury Scare With Wild Card Stakes

Nolan Arenado's potential MRI could send shockwaves through the Diamondbacks' playoff hopes as they brace for his unknown torso ailment.

Nolan Arenado’s afternoon ended early in Arizona’s 5-3 loss to the Braves, and the Diamondbacks are now waiting to find out whether the issue is more than a scare.

The third baseman exited with what the club called left trunk discomfort, and Arenado said afterward that he would “ probably get an MRI,” adding that he was “ worried ” because the soreness felt unfamiliar. He explained the moment this way: “ I just felt a little bit of pain under the intercostal area, I don’t know,” Arenado said.

“ I haven’t felt that before. I had to get taken out of the game.

I felt it before the at-bat. But it didn’t feel like pain or anything.

When I swung, it wasn’t getting drastically worse, but it didn’t feel right…. I just didn’t want to mess around with it.”

Arenado also said he “ felt a little something ” while putting on his leg guard before his fourth-inning plate appearance. The discomfort showed up again when he grounded out to third and appeared uneasy running up the line. Arizona then turned to Ildemaro Vargas at third base for the bottom of the inning.

The timing is what makes this one sting for the Diamondbacks. Arenado had just turned in maybe his sharpest performance of the year a day earlier, belting two home runs in Arizona’s 10-3 win over Atlanta on Saturday. That pushed him to 20 homers for the ninth time in his 14 MLB seasons.

Overall, Arenado is hitting .241/.321/.443 across 458 plate appearances for the D’Backs, with a 108 wRC+. That mark is still short of the peak production he delivered in his prime, but it does represent a bounce-back from the 84 wRC+ he put up in 436 PA during an injury-marred 2025 season with the Cardinals.

He has also been one of the more dependable pieces on a Diamondbacks club trying to stay in the wild card race. In 118 games, Arenado has produced 2.2 fWAR, and any injured list stint would be a blow to Arizona’s playoff push.

If he does miss time, Vargas and Tim Tawa would be the likeliest options to split third base duties. Jordan Lawlar is also on a rehab assignment and nearing a return from the 60-day IL, though he has been used exclusively as an outfielder in the majors and minors in 2026 despite having third base experience.

Bryce Elder's Latest Issue Puts Braves Rotation In A Tough Spot

Bryce Elder gave the Braves another steady outing, working six innings and allowing one run with five strikeouts even as manager Walt Weiss said the right-hander was dealing with a knee injury. It was the latest reminder of why Elder has mattered so much to Atlantas rotation this season, with the righty logging a 3.92 ERA over 24 starts and giving the club dependable innings when it has needed them most.

Now the Braves have a decision to make, and it could affect the rest of the pitching staff. They are trying to figure out how best to handle Elders knee issue, with a 15-day injured list move or a rotation adjustment both on the table, and any shuffle could open the door for AJ Smith-Shawver to slide into a spot. Braves Just Sent A Telling Lineup Message With Mauricio Dubon

The Braves lineup card offered a notable hint Friday, with Mauricio Dubon set to start in left field and hit fifth. It is the kind of move that stands out because it places a versatile role player in a prominent spot, and it comes as the club continues sorting through recent performance trends for several regulars, including Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Riley, while also peeking at the matchup against Twins right-hander Bailey Ober.

There is some extra texture in the pitcher-batter history too, though the numbers come with the usual caution about tiny samples and are mostly there for amusement. Martin Perez also factors into the broader scouting picture, but the bigger takeaway for Atlanta is the same one the batting order suggests: Dubon is in a position to matter, and the way the Braves are aligning pieces around him says plenty about how they are viewing this game. Braves May Have A Creative Answer For Their AJ Smith-Shawver Dilemma

AJ Smith-Shawvers next step with the Braves may not be the straightforward return trip to the rotation that many expected. Atlanta has been weighing creative ways to use the young right-hander as it sorts through its pitching mix, and one option under discussion would place him back on the major league roster in a relief role rather than asking him to immediately reclaim a starting job.

There is also a broader wrinkle tied to Grant Holmes, whose place in the rotation has been a point of confidence for Walt Weiss. The Braves have at least considered a tandem-style approach that would let Holmes begin games before Smith-Shawver handles the next stretch, a sign the club is still searching for the cleanest way to balance innings, roles and roster flexibility. For now, the final call remains unsettled, which keeps the door open to more than one outcome. [Read more 🡒]
