The Braves have unveiled BravesVision, their very own media platform set to broadcast games both on TV and via streaming. This move allows fans direct access to games without the hassle of local blackouts, covering all regular season matchups except those with national exclusivity. The team has also provided an FAQ page for any lingering questions.
Previously, Atlanta was part of a regional sports network deal with Main Street Sports, formerly Diamond Sports Group. However, financial struggles due to cord-cutting led to missed payments, prompting nine MLB teams, including Atlanta, to terminate their agreements in January.
While six teams have turned to the league for broadcasting solutions, the Braves have taken a different path by establishing their own network, similar to the Texas Rangers' approach last year. This strategic move could impact the team's finances, as they previously earned over $100 million annually from their RSN deal. Reports suggest that teams in similar situations have seen revenues cut by about half.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred aims to create a streaming package encompassing as many teams as possible. However, convincing large-market clubs with successful RSN deals to join a centralized system may prove challenging, as it would involve sharing TV revenue with smaller markets.
For fans, BravesVision is a win. After a 2024 dispute left some local cable subscribers without access to games, this new setup promises broader availability, ensuring fans can catch most of the action.
