Braves Just Made Another High Upside Pitching Bet

The Atlanta Braves make a strategic move by picking highly-regarded pitcher Jensen Hirschkorn in the 2026 MLB Draft, betting on his promising potential and future growth.

With the 84th pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves added a high-upside arm in California prep right-hander Jensen Hirschkorn.

Hirschkorn comes out of Kingsburg High School in Kingsburg, CA, and is listed at 6-foot-7, 205 pounds. He throws right-handed and bats left-handed. The Braves are getting a pitcher who is viewed as an overslot selection and, by the reporting here, a first-round talent who will need time before he moves quickly through the system.

The rankings back up that profile. Baseball America had him at 43, Perfect Game at 34, Pipeline at 56, ESPN at 58, and the overslot ranking at 74. The author’s own ranking placed him at 29, with a consensus mark of 47.

The fastball is the headliner. Hirschkorn’s heater has been up to 96 MPH and already shows plus traits, with a two-seamer in the mix as well. The projection is what makes it even more intriguing, since there’s still plenty of room for him to add strength and turn that pitch into a definite plus offering.

His slider is already nasty. It’s described as a swing-and-miss weapon and carries another plus grade.

The changeup is a useful third pitch, especially against lefties, though it still needs work versus right-handed hitters.

Command is another reason he stands out. For a pitcher his size, Hirschkorn already shows very strong control, which is rare, and the expectation is that he can continue to develop into above-average command as he matures.

The overall read is clear: this is a highly projectable first-round type who has impressed in showcases and should become an impact arm for Atlanta. He’s more advanced than most prep pitchers, but because he still needs development and added strength, he isn’t expected to move especially fast.

The Braves also went with another high school right-handed pitcher with their third-round pick. Hirschkorn had been committed to LSU.

Braves Suffer Another Outfield Shakeup In The Middle Of Draft Night

The Braves outfield picture shifted again Saturday night, with the club making a fresh round of roster moves while the MLB Draft was unfolding. Atlanta recalled Brewer Hicklen from Triple-A Gwinnett to help fill the opening, and the team also brought back right-hander Owen Murphy as part of a broader shuffle that touched both the bullpen and the depth chart.

James Karinchak was optioned to Gwinnett, Jose Azocar was outrighted to Triple-A and AJ Smith-Shawver had his rehab assignment moved to Gwinnett as well. The timing only added to the sense of urgency around the roster, since the announcements landed in the middle of draft-night buzz and left the Braves managing yet another adjustment as they try to stabilize the group around the edges. Braves Fans May Be Surprised By These Alex Anthopoulos Draft Busts

Alex Anthopoulos has built plenty of goodwill in Atlanta by turning trades into core pieces, but the Braves recent draft record still has a few rough spots worth remembering. A review of his first-round picks turns up names like Braden Shewmake, Jared Shuster and Ryan Cusick, players who arrived with real expectations and never quite matched them once the spotlight got brighter.

Shewmake was moved to the White Sox before the 2024 season in the Aaron Bummer deal, while Shusters path took a sharp turn after a difficult major league debut and an offseason trade. Cusick, meanwhile, is now trying to regroup in the Phillies Triple-A system, a reminder that even in a front office known for aggressive roster building, not every early swing has connected the way the Braves hoped.
