The Braves may end up circling back to one of last season’s quieter pickups.
Atlanta didn’t make a splashy run through free agency a year ago, but the moves it did make served a purpose. The bullpen got attention, with Raisel Iglesias returning and Robert Suarez added to the mix. Another transaction that slipped by with less noise was the trade for Mauricio Dubón.
Dubón came over from the Houston Astros in an exchange of infielders for Nick Allen, and the deal gave Atlanta a player who could move around the diamond and handle whatever job was needed. ESPN noted that “The Braves also acquired two-time Gold Glove winner Mauricio Dubon from the Houston Astros for Nick Allen in an exchange of infielders.
Dubon, 31, appeared in 133 games with Houston last season and batted .241 while earning his second Gold Glove, each time as a utility infielder. He also won the award in 2023.
Dubon had a $5 million salary this year, and he is eligible for salary arbitration. He can become a free agent after the 2026 World Series,” ESPN wrote.
His versatility became especially useful as the season wore on. Dubón eventually settled into a starting role at shortstop, something Braves reporter Grant McAuley pointed out clearly: “This signals Mauricio Dubón will take over primary SS duties after spending much of the summer in the OF. Braves SS rank in the bottom 3 in AVG/OBP/SLG and WAR since May 1,” Braves reporter Grant McAuley wrote.
Now the offseason puts Atlanta back in decision-making mode, and Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller believes Dubón could be in the picture again if the money and years line up.
“Mauricio Dubón was arguably Atlanta's most important player, not named Chris Sale, presumably headed for his third utility Gold Glove in four years. Despite never having a position to call his own and not logging enough plate appearances to qualify for a batting title in any season from 2021-25, Dubón has been worth 8.0 bWAR since the beginning of 2023, batting a respectable .268 during that time. If Atlanta can afford to re-sign him to a multi-year deal, we know he's a perfect fit,” Miller wrote.
Dubón’s value went beyond the box score. He gave Atlanta flexibility, steady defense and a presence the fan base could latch onto. With a World Series ring and two Gold Gloves already on his résumé, he brought real experience to the roster.
For now, the question is simple: will the Braves make room to bring him back? With a hole at shortstop, a reunion makes sense on both sides.

Braves Still Have One Offseason Question That Could Reshape Their Lineup
Left field remains one of the clearest places for the Braves to upgrade this winter, and that search is starting to take shape around a familiar name. Seiya Suzuki is set to hit free agency after finishing the final season of his five-year deal with the Cubs, and his mix of offense and defensive value makes him a logical fit for a club looking to sharpen the edges of its lineup.
The challenge, of course, is that Atlanta would not be chasing him alone. Other teams are expected to be in the mix, and Chicago is also expected to extend Suzuki a qualifying offer, which would only make the pursuit more complicated for the Braves. For a team trying to answer one lingering offseason question, this could turn into one of the more consequential decisions of the winter. [Read more 🡒]
Braves Could Revisit A Familiar Offseason Habit For 2027 Help
The Braves have never been shy about circling back to familiar names when they need help, and that possibility is already hanging over their planning for 2027. With a roster that will need depth and experience again, Atlanta could look at former contributors who know the organization well and might be available without much long-term risk.
Several ex-Braves are set to hit free agency, giving the front office a pool of players it already understands. What makes this especially interesting is that the fit could come in more than one area of the roster, from the bullpen to the rotation, so the next offseason could feature a reunion or two if the Braves decide old friends still make sense. Phillies Face A Third Base Decision Braves Fans Should Watch
Philadelphias offseason picture in the National League East is already taking shape, and the Phillies have at least one familiar face to sort through as they move forward under Don Mattingly, who is staying on with a two-year deal. The bigger watch for Braves fans is third base, where Alec Bohm has reached free agency for the first time and suddenly gives Philadelphia a decision it has not had to make with him before.
If Bohm moves on, the Phillies will need to fill a prominent spot in the lineup and on the infield, and that has opened the door to some outside speculation about how they might do it. One name that has surfaced is Japanese star Teruaki Sato, whose power production and award-winning season overseas make him an intriguing fit if Philadelphia decides to go in a different direction at the hot corner.
