The Braves’ first look at Tyler Mahle in a new rotation spot will have to wait a bit.
Friday night’s game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium has been delayed by rain, with New York announcing before first pitch that the club did not expect to start on time. The Yankees said, “Please be advised we do not intend to start tonight’s game on time. Information will be provided as it is received.”
Atlanta came into the series riding strong form and with a lineup that’s been helped by the return to health of key pieces and the addition of Lane Thomas at the trade deadline. But even with the Braves stacking their lineup with right-handed hitters for the opener, the weather had its own plans. Storms have been scattered across the Northeast, and that threat was enough to put the game on hold before it began.
Mahle was scheduled to face former teammate Max Fried in a matchup that had a little extra attention attached to it. For now, though, the bigger question is simply when the teams will actually get on the field.
The delay could end up being brief, or it could turn into a longer wait if conditions worsen. The current forecast has the chance of rain dropping around 8 PM, and a 1.5 hour delay feels like the most likely outcome. Still, there’s no firm start time yet, and that can change quickly depending on how the weather behaves.
For the moment, the expectation is that baseball will be played tonight at some point.
