The injury bug continues to plague the Atlanta Braves, particularly in their starting rotation. Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach are set to spend significant time on the injured list after undergoing procedures to remove loose bodies from their throwing elbows.
This leaves the Braves in a familiar bind, as health concerns have also surrounded Chris Sale and Spencer Strider, the team’s projected top two starters. The remaining spots are expected to be filled by Reynaldo Lopez, Grant Holmes, and Bryce Elder.
With spring training nearing its conclusion, the Braves still have an opportunity to explore the free agent market for reinforcements. One intriguing option is a 31-year-old All-Star and seasoned veteran who remains unsigned.
Adding Depth with Giolito
Right-hander Lucas Giolito, who had an up-and-down season with the Boston Red Sox, is still on the market. Known for his struggles with the long ball, Giolito could nonetheless provide the Braves with much-needed depth.
"If Atlanta could add Giolito to their roster, it would add tremendous depth," noted analyst Austin Owens. "Even a move like placing Giolito in the rotation and shifting Grant Holmes to the bullpen could significantly impact the Braves' fortunes."
Last season, Giolito posted a 3.41 ERA over 145 innings with the Red Sox, tallying 121 strikeouts against 56 walks. While his prime strikeout days with the Chicago White Sox are behind him, his experience could be invaluable.
"Giolito doesn't need to be an All-Star in Atlanta to make a difference," Owens added. "Manager Walt Weiss needs someone reliable at the back end of the rotation to keep them competitive every fifth day. It's clear Bryce Elder hasn't been able to fill that role effectively."
The Braves face a pivotal decision as they look to bolster their rotation and navigate the challenges posed by injuries. Adding a veteran like Giolito could be the key to maintaining their competitive edge this season.
