The Atlanta Braves kicked off the season with a bang, securing a commanding 6-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Opening Day. It was a night where everything seemed to click for the Braves, from powerful hitting to solid defense, setting a hopeful tone for the season ahead.
Chris Sale, known for his reliability, had a rocky start but managed to find his groove as the game progressed. The Braves’ bats were on fire, launching three home runs, and their defense was sharp, making key plays that kept the Royals at bay.
The game started with a bit of luck for the Braves. After Maikel Garcia singled, Sale induced a double play from Bobby Witt Jr., easing any early nerves.
Royals’ pitcher Cole Ragans initially held his ground, but Ozzie Albies capitalized on a shaky changeup, sending it over the left-field corner for the Braves’ first homer and run of the season. Matt Olson followed up with a solid single, and despite a brief lull, the Braves were setting the tone.
Sale’s second inning was a rollercoaster with a hit-by-pitch and a walk loading the bases. Yet, he escaped unscathed thanks to another double play, keeping the Royals scoreless. Ragans showed resilience, striking out the side in the bottom of the inning, but it was clear the Braves were gaining momentum.
Drake Baldwin extended the lead with a homer in the third, taking advantage of a misplaced fastball from Ragans. This homer was particularly notable as Ragans rarely gives up long balls to lefties. Albies continued his hot streak with another hit, although an attempted steal dampened the momentum temporarily.
By the fourth inning, Sale had settled into his rhythm, delivering a smooth 1-2-3 inning. Michael Harris II then joined the homer parade with a two-run shot, further demoralizing Ragans, who was having an uncharacteristically tough night against left-handed hitters.
As Sale continued to dominate, the Braves’ defense shone, with standout plays from Olson, Ronald Acuña Jr., and Austin Riley. Ragans exited after four innings, handing over to Bailey Falter, who managed to contain the Braves until the seventh inning when they added two more runs through a series of well-placed hits.
The Braves’ bullpen closed out the game with minimal fuss. Dylan Lee, Robert Suarez, and Tyler Kinley combined to keep the Royals scoreless, with Kinley’s breaking pitches particularly baffling the Kansas City lineup.
New Braves manager Walt Weiss celebrated his first win, and while Sale’s stats weren’t dazzling, his performance improved as the game went on. Albies and Olson each notched two hits, while Riley had a perfect night at the plate, showcasing the depth of Atlanta’s lineup. Acuña had a quieter game, but with the team firing on all cylinders, there’s plenty of time for him to shine.
Ragans, on the other hand, had a rough outing, struggling with control and yielding three home runs. Falter provided some relief for the Royals with a solid stint, despite some bloop hits that padded the Braves’ lead.
The series continues with Reynaldo Lopez set to face Michael Wacha, as the Braves aim to build on this soul-cleansing victory and keep the momentum rolling.
