Braves Claim Yankees Pitcher As Injuries Force Urgent Move

Amid a wave of injuries threatening their 2026 MLB campaign, the Braves take a decisive step by claiming former Yankees pitcher Osvaldo Bido off waivers.

The Atlanta Braves are facing a tough start to the 2026 MLB season, a scenario that fans certainly weren't hoping for after last year's playoff miss with a 76-86 record. The team seemed poised for a comeback, but a string of injuries to their pitching staff is threatening to derail their season before it even begins.

In response, the Braves are scrambling to address their pitching woes. Their first move?

Snagging right-hander Osvaldo Bido off waivers. Bido, a former Yankees pitcher, was released earlier today and will now suit up for his fourth team in as many years.

The Braves were already entering the season with a depleted pitching lineup. AJ Smith-Shawver is out for the year following Tommy John surgery, and Joey Wentz is likely sidelined for the season with a torn ACL, landing him on the 60-day IL. Spencer Schwellenbach is also out for at least two months after surgery to remove bone spurs.

Adding to the challenges, star pitcher Spencer Strider will miss the first few weeks due to an oblique injury suffered during Spring Training. Strider, a former Cy Young contender, has had a career marred by injuries, including two elbow reconstructions.

Atlanta has traditionally boasted strong pitching depth, especially in their starting rotation. However, that depth is now under pressure with nearly half of their starters out. Chris Sale, the 2024 Cy Young winner, remains healthy and is expected to take the mound on Opening Day, supported by Braves regulars Bryce Elder, Reynaldo Lopez, and Grant Holmes.

The Braves might also explore free agency for a temporary fix, with former Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito emerging as a possible option. This situation will test Atlanta's resilience and resourcefulness as they navigate the early challenges of the season.
