The Braves still have time on their side with Robert Suarez, but the calendar is starting to matter.
Suarez landed on the injured list in mid-June with elbow inflammation, and initial tests showed no structural damage. At first glance, it looked like the kind of issue that might keep him out only a few weeks. Instead, nearly two months have passed, and he still hasn’t thrown a bullpen.
That delay is what makes this situation worth watching. Suarez has been one of the Braves’ most valuable arms in his first season with the club, posting a 0.56 ERA across 31 appearances while working almost entirely in high-leverage spots.
Walt Weiss offered the clearest update yet on where things stand.
“The philosophy there is we want him to be 100% pain-free before he starts to ramp up again,” Weiss said, via Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “At this point of the season, we just can’t afford a setback.
If he were to have a setback, his season is probably over. So we’re just really making sure he’s 100% when he steps on the mound again so he can sprint to the finish line.”
Burns also reported that Suarez’s pain in the elbow is minimal now, which matches what Alex Anthopoulos said earlier this week.
“This is about October,” Anthopoulos told Suarez, making sure there were never any thoughts in his mind about trying to rush back.
The Braves are clearly treating Suarez with caution, and there’s still enough time for him to return and build back up before the postseason. But the next month will tell the story. If he still hasn’t started throwing by then, the concern level will rise fast - because Atlanta doesn’t just need Suarez available, it needs the version of him that was dominating before the injury.
He’s one of three key arms the Braves are hoping to get back before October, along with AJ Smith-Shawver and Spencer Schwellenbach.
Smith-Shawver has already returned to the majors after Tommy John surgery last May, and he recently turned in a strong outing for the Gwinnett Stripers. The expectation is that he’ll be back with the Braves within the next couple of weeks.
Schwellenbach is the biggest question mark. His 2025 season ended with a fractured elbow, and after he was initially expected to be ready for this year’s opener, a setback led to surgery to remove loose bodies from the same elbow. He has thrown several bullpens, but it remains unclear whether the Braves will push him to return at all this season, even with the rotation needing help.
