Braves Add Pitching Depth with Kyle Nelson Signing

The Braves take a calculated chance on left-hander Kyle Nelson, hoping he can reclaim his past form after a challenging 2025 season.

The Atlanta Braves have made a strategic move by signing left-hander Kyle Nelson to a minor league deal. While it's still uncertain whether Nelson will join the major league or minor league camp, this signing presents an intriguing opportunity for both the player and the team.

Nelson, now 29, showed promise during his time with the Diamondbacks in 2022 and 2023. Over those two seasons, he pitched 93 innings primarily as a reliever, with a few starts as an opener. His performance was solid, sporting a 3.39 ERA, a strikeout rate of 24.9%, and a walk rate of 7.2%-both slightly better than the league average.

However, Nelson faced challenges after undergoing thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in April 2024, which sidelined him for most of that season. In 2025, his return to the mound was marked by reduced velocity and effectiveness.

His fastball, which previously averaged around 92 mph, dropped to about 90 mph. He spent most of the year in the minors, making just three major league appearances and struggling with a 9.09 ERA in Triple-A.

The Diamondbacks removed him from their roster twice, leading Nelson to elect free agency.

For the Braves, signing Nelson to a non-roster deal is a low-risk move. With Dylan Lee and Aaron Bummer projected as their top lefty relievers, and José Suarez likely serving as a long reliever or swingman, there's room for Nelson to make an impact if he can regain his form. Dylan Dodd and Hayden Harris are also in the mix, but their limited MLB experience means they might shuttle between Triple-A and the majors.

If Nelson can bounce back and earn a spot on the roster, he still has one option season left, giving the Braves flexibility as they navigate the season.
