Alex Anthopoulos has never been shy about bringing back familiar faces, and that history makes two former Braves worth watching as the trade deadline approaches.
The most obvious name is Kevin Gausman, especially if Toronto decides to move off its pending free agent. The Blue Jays are sitting six games under .500 and in last place in the AL East, but that hasn’t exactly forced their hand yet.
They were one win away from the World Series a year ago, still have a roster with talent, and their ownership group has shown plenty of aggression. Add in the fact that the American League has been a mess around them, and they remain close enough to the final Wild Card spot that a sale is far from guaranteed.
If the Blue Jays do go that route, though, Gausman would be one of the first names to go. He’s in the final year of his contract, and while he’s not pitching like the Cy Young-level arm he once was, he’d still slide in as the Braves’ second-best starter and give them a pitcher they could trust in a playoff game. Gausman has a 4.33 ERA across 112.1 innings this season, but his 3.65 FIP hints that better results could be coming after the break.
There’s also a little bit of history here. The last time Anthopoulos made a midseason trade for a starting pitcher, it was for Gausman back in 2018.
Then there’s A.J. Minter, a reunion candidate on a smaller scale but one that makes sense for Atlanta’s bullpen. A trade between the Braves and Mets doesn’t happen often, and it may not happen often going forward, but Minter at least gives the two sides something to think about.
He signed with New York in free agency a couple of offseasons ago and has dealt with lat injuries ever since, including one that kept him out for 13 months. Still, when he’s been healthy enough to pitch, he’s looked like the same arm Atlanta knew for years. Since arriving with the Mets, Minter has posted a 1.50 ERA in 32 appearances, and he’s at 1.42 this season.
Atlanta’s bullpen has been one of the steadier parts of the roster, and it should get even stronger once Robert Suarez comes off the Injured List. Even so, another high-leverage lefty to work alongside Dylan Lee is a real need. Anthopoulos would have to at least check in on Minter, even if those talks never get serious.

Braves Reunion With Familiar Starter Comes With One Major Warning
Kevin Gausman is a familiar name around Atlanta again, and not just because of the brief stop he made with the Braves in 2018. After that initial run went sideways and ended with his release the next season, he rebuilt his value with the Giants and eventually landed a long-term deal in Toronto, where the results have been uneven. Now in a difficult year with the Blue Jays, his name is back in the rumor mill as the trade deadline approaches, which naturally invites a second look from a Braves club that knows both the upside and the risk.
The problem for Atlanta is that this kind of reunion would come with real uncertainty attached. Gausmans season has been his toughest in Toronto, and any deal would have to be weighed against the kind of return the Blue Jays would ask for in exchange. For a Braves team that has to think carefully about how much it wants to pay for pitching help, the appeal is obvious, but so is the caution. [Read more 🡒]
Why Braves Fans Should Be So Invested In This Draft Bet
AJ Gracias path to the Braves has been shaped by the kind of steady family backing that makes a long baseball climb feel possible, from his days growing up in Monroe Township, New Jersey, to the college stops that kept pushing him toward pro ball. The journey has had plenty of ordinary life mixed in with the baseball, too, with his parents following along as he moved from amateur ball into the next stage of his career.
Now the focus shifts to Florida, where Gracia is preparing to report to the Braves complex in North Port while his parents head back to New Jersey. For a family that has spent years around the game and around his development, the move marks a new separation and a new beginning, with the support system still in place even as the daily routine changes. Braves And Phillies Linked To Same Deadline Arm In Major NL East Twist
The NL East race has a way of turning the trade deadline into a staring contest, and this year the Braves and Phillies are both in the middle of it. With both clubs sitting near the top of the National League and looking like buyers, the same pitching market is drawing their attention, which only adds another layer to a division fight that already feels tight.
One name hovering over that conversation is Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, a potential difference-maker who would cost a serious package in return. Nothing has been confirmed, and no offers have been made public, but the idea of Atlanta and Philadelphia circling the same arm says plenty about how aggressively both front offices may have to think if they want to keep pace in a race that could still shape October.
