Georgia’s backfield took a hit Tuesday when Kirby Smart confirmed that transfer running back Dante Dowdell is out with an injury, a setback that could linger well into the season.
Smart stopped short of detailing exactly what happened to Dowdell during SEC Media Days, but he made clear the situation is serious and that the staff is waiting to learn more. The rumors that surfaced late last week about a possible ATV accident were not addressed directly, though Smart did say the outlook is still uncertain.
"We're praying for him and his family,” Smart said via 247Sports.com. “We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we're waiting to see.
We'll go day to day with him and see. I hate that for him and his family, but he's a great kid.
It's been tough. A lot of our players have been over there to see him.
It's just one of those really tough situations."
Dowdell was supposed to give Georgia a different look in the run game. Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens are expected to handle the top two spots in the rotation, and both were strong last season. Still, Dowdell was viewed as a key piece because of what he brings as a bigger back, especially in short-yardage situations.
His path to Athens has been a winding one. Dowdell started at Oregon, then moved on to Nebraska and Kentucky before arriving at Georgia this offseason. He has 16 touchdowns in his career, and he turned heads at G-Day this spring by rushing for 61 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.
Now the question is how long Georgia will be without him. With the season starting in less than 50 days, a return for the opener looks doubtful, and there’s even a chance he could miss the entire year. Smart hasn’t shut the door on a comeback later in the season, but there’s no firm timeline yet.
Georgia does have depth in the backfield, so this isn’t a season-breaker by itself. But Dowdell was expected to fill a specific role, and that role now has to be covered by someone else.
And he’s not the only injury concern already hanging over the Bulldogs. Auburn transfer Amaris Williams tore his ACL during spring ball, and that injury was ruled season-ending. Williams has said he’ll do everything he can to return by the end of the year, but that kind of recovery in that timeframe is a long shot.
For Georgia, the injury list is already getting crowded before the season even starts.
