PORTLAND - Arkansas Basketball Faces Depth Challenge in NCAA Second Round
As Arkansas gears up for their second-round NCAA Tournament matchup against 12th-seed High Point, the team could once again be without senior center Nick Pringle. Officially listed as 'questionable' on Friday night, Pringle's availability remains uncertain.
This echoes the lead-up to their first-round victory over Hawaii, where Pringle was also a game-time decision. Karter Knox remains out, as expected.
In Pringle's absence, forwards Malique Ewin and Trevon Brazile stepped up impressively against Hawaii, combining for 35 points, 18 rebounds, four blocks, and four steals. Their performance was pivotal in the convincing win, but the lack of depth without Pringle is still a concern. If Pringle is sidelined again, Arkansas will have just six rotation players available.
Pringle expressed his eagerness to play, stating, "I want to play. Bad.
So, we're going to try to work for that tomorrow night." He rated his chances of playing at a "six out of 10," acknowledging that he hasn't fully consulted with his trainer yet.
Despite not participating fully in practice, Pringle is doing light work on the side, striving to reach full fitness.
Throughout the season, Pringle has been a constant presence in Arkansas' starting lineup, despite posting his lowest numbers since his freshman year at Alabama. This season, he averages 4.6 points and 3.9 rebounds, shooting 72% from the field. His contributions were crucial in Arkansas' recent SEC Tournament Championship win over Vanderbilt, where he recorded six rebounds, two blocks, a steal, and an assist in 22 minutes.
Arkansas head coach John Calipari praised Pringle's leadership and impact, especially highlighting his role in the SEC title game. "I am so happy for Nick and what he did," Calipari said. Pringle's influence extends beyond the stats, as he consistently demonstrates selflessness and leadership, allowing teammates to shine even at the expense of his own playing time.
An example of Pringle's team-first mentality occurred during Arkansas' 94-86 victory over Missouri. Despite a quiet first half, Pringle encouraged Calipari to start Malique Ewin in the second half due to Ewin's strong performance. "Think about that," Calipari reflected, emphasizing Pringle's unselfish nature.
Arkansas will tip-off against High Point at 8:45 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday, with coverage on TBS and truTV. The team hopes to continue their tournament run, whether or not Pringle takes the court.
