In a commanding performance, fourth-seeded Arkansas cruised past No. 13 seed Hawaii with a decisive 97-78 victory in the Round of 64. Despite missing starting senior forward Nick Pringle, the Razorbacks found a hero in veteran forward Malique Ewin, who stepped up in spectacular fashion to propel the team into the Round of 32.
Ewin was nothing short of a powerhouse, racking up 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, with six of those coming on the offensive glass. His stat line also boasted six assists, two steals, and a block over 31 minutes. Dominating the paint, Ewin tallied 12 points inside, including eight from emphatic dunks, showcasing his all-around impact on both ends of the court.
Arkansas head coach John Calipari was effusive in his praise, highlighting Ewin's relentless energy and versatility. "Malique Ewin is showing he's basically telling on himself of, 'This is how good I am,'" Calipari noted.
"The way he chased down balls with unbelievable energy. He’s setting himself and our team up for the rest of his basketball career on the things he's doing."
Ewin’s performance had him flirting with a triple-double for much of the second half. His background as a guard was evident in his court vision and playmaking ability.
"I played guard," Ewin shared postgame. "I like to assist more.
That's what I did tonight. Got it done."
With Pringle sidelined as a precaution, Ewin's recent form made the decision easier for Calipari. Over four postseason games, Ewin is averaging 10.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists on an impressive 69.6% shooting. His free throw accuracy has also improved, hitting 75% from the line, including a flawless 4-for-4 in this game.
Calipari reflected on Ewin's growth, saying, "Malique busted through here the last week or two. He is a difference maker for us.
Proud of what he's been able to do. It's not been easy."
The Razorbacks now set their sights on No. 12 seed High Point, who pulled off an upset over the No. 5 seed Wisconsin Badgers. Details for Saturday's matchup at the Moda Center in Portland are still to be announced. Arkansas fans will be eager to see if Ewin and the team can maintain their momentum and continue their tournament run.
