Calipari Sees One Huge Boost For Arkansas In Muurinen Update

The NCAA's decision to clear Miikka Muurinen has reinvigorated the Razorbacks as they prepare for the upcoming season, with Coach Calipari expressing both relief and optimism for the team's dynamic future.

One week after Miikka Muurinen was cleared by the NCAA, Arkansas coach John Calipari said the decision brought an obvious sense of relief inside the program.

For Calipari, the biggest part of it was simple: Muurinen no longer has to sit in limbo wondering whether he’ll get to play.

"Can you imagine having to be 19, and at the end of the year you're going to be 19 - could you imagine being 19 and not kowing if you're going to play or not?," Calipari said. "Or that you're going to be sent home?

Could you imagine what he went through? That's why it was hugging and crying."

The reaction, Calipari said, showed up quickly. Social media videos captured how much the moment meant to Muurinen and his teammates, and the coach said the freshman sent him a message that night.

"He texted me that night, 'Coach, I can't think you enough.' And he's been terrific in practice, because he was bad for a couple.

I'm like, 'what's wrong with this kid in there?' Like, you're joking, Coach - one of the staff.

We know this is weighing on him. So that being done, it's not weighing on anybody now.

We know he's there. Let's see how he is.

I got to get him to do some things that he's not going, but that's on me."

Calipari also spent Wednesday talking through the state of his roster, especially the frontcourt. Cooper Bowser has been sidelined and is expected to remain out for about another 10 days, which means he will not take part in Friday’s Primetime At The Palace event.

"It's given our big guys, the other big guys, a chance to get really good reps," Calipari said. "So that's been pretty good."

Among that group, Calipari singled out 7-foot freshman Maper Maker, while also pointing to Caleb Ourigou as the Razorbacks’ most physical option inside. Ourigou is listed at 6-foot-11 and 250 pounds.

"Caleb will do something we don't have," Calipari said. "He's 245 pounds.

My big guys right now are 223 and 216, and he's 245, 247. So he gives us the big, and there may be a game like, okay, he's gonna be that guy."

He also praised the team’s guards, including JJ Andrews, Jordan Smith Jr. and Davion Thompson.

Fans will get their first look at the 2026-27 Razorbacks on Friday at Bud Walton Arena. Admission to Primetime at the Palace is free, and Calipari urged supporters to make the trip to Fayetteville. After the event, players will be available to take pictures and sign autographs.

Arkansas Fans Get First Look At Calipari's New Team Without One Piece

The Razorbacks are set to give fans another early peek at John Caliparis new group Friday night at Bud Walton Arena, when Arkansas stages its second annual Primetime at the Palace. The event is built as a showcase for both the mens and womens teams, with introductions, contests, drills and a mens scrimmage all on the schedule after doors open at 7 p.m.

It will not be a complete first look, though, because Furman transfer Cooper Bowser will sit out after a hand injury. Even with that absence, the night offers one more chance for Arkansas fans to size up the roster before the exhibition games arrive and the real season begins. [Read more 🡒]

Arkansas Fans Still Lack Clarity After Hunter Yurachek Meeting

A special University of Arkansas Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday kept the focus on employment matters involving public employees, including athletic director Hunter Yurachek, but it did not deliver any immediate clarity for Razorback fans looking for answers. After spending two hours in executive session, the board adjourned without taking action on Yurachek or any other employee, leaving the situation in the same gray area it entered.

The broader review of Razorback athletics remains ongoing, and Yuracheks contract is still set to run through Dec. 31, 2027. For now, that leaves Arkansas with more process than resolution, and plenty of reason for supporters to keep watching for what comes next. [Read more 🡒]

Arkansas Faces A Defining SEC Test With Real Doubts Still Lurking

The Razorbacks head into Week 4 with a chance to turn a little momentum into something more meaningful. After beating Tulsa, Arkansas has at least given itself a steadier footing, but the trip to face Texas A&M brings a different kind of pressure, one that comes with SEC stakes and a conference slate that has already started to expose both teams. With each sitting at 2-2 overall and still searching for a league win, this matchup carries the feel of an early separator in a race neither side can afford to let drift.

Texas A&M is trying to stop the bleeding after consecutive SEC losses, and the home setting only adds to the urgency. For Arkansas, the assignment is less about style points than proof, a chance to show the recent improvement can travel into a tougher environment and hold up against a team desperate to reset. The result will not settle the season, but it could say a lot about how much confidence the Razorbacks can carry into the next stretch. [Read more 🡒]
