Arkansas’ defense took a hit Wednesday, but there was also a little relief mixed in as Ryan Silverfield laid out the Razorbacks’ injury situation heading into fall camp.
The biggest blow is the loss of junior college transfer J’Lynn Allen, who will miss the entire 2026 season because of an undisclosed injury. Silverfield said Allen’s season is over while speaking to reporters at SEC Media Days.
"One guy, just so y'all know, Connor Smith, our punter, is out with an ACL injury and will miss the season," Silverfield said. "Then, J'Lynn Allen is another name, he has an injury and will miss the entire season as well."
Allen came to Arkansas with a strong JUCO résumé after starring at Hutchinson Community College. The former North Little Rock standout posted 31 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and two forced fumbles, production that made him one of the more sought-after junior college defensive ends in the country.
He was rated the No. 88 JUCO prospect nationally for 2026 and No. 10 at his position by 247Sports.
At 6-foot-7 and 245 pounds, Allen had the size and burst to push for early snaps on a defensive line that needed help. He also drew interest from a long list of programs, including West Virginia, Arkansas State, Southern Miss, Georgia State, UTSA, UL-Monroe, Eastern Michigian, Texas State, Western Michigan and Sam Houston State before choosing Arkansas.
The injury news also included true freshman punter Connor Smith, who will miss the season with an ACL injury. Smith, ranked as the No. 9 overall punter prospect by Khol's Kicking, was hurt during the Razorbacks' winter conditioning program, and Silverfield said the issue has been referenced repeatedly throughout the offseason.
There was better news on two defensive transfers expected back for fall practice. Silverfield said, "Yeah, Braydon Lee will be full go," and "Phoenix Jackson should be full go,"
Lee, a former 4-star prospect from Springdale (Md.), played in 11 games for Maryland last season and started two of them. He finished with 18 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and one interception before entering the transfer portal and landing at Arkansas with teammate La'Khi Roland.
Jackson’s path has been longer. He had been dealing with a toe injury that dates back to last season at Baylor after transferring there from Fresno State, where he spent four years. The former walk-on linebacker has totaled 112 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks and three interceptions over five college seasons.
With Allen and Smith sidelined, Arkansas will be leaning on the expected returns of Lee and Jackson as Ron Roberts works to reshape the defense. The Razorbacks are trying to build more consistency after a complete overhaul at every level of the unit, and those two healthy bodies should help stabilize things once fall camp opens.
