Arkansas May Have Found A Tight End Boost Behind Jaden Platt

After transferring twice, Ty Lockwood is finding his place at Arkansas, showcasing his skills as a versatile tight end both in blocking and receiving.

Ty Lockwood didn’t arrive at Arkansas as a mystery, but he did arrive with questions.

The 6-foot-4, 246-pound tight end came in as a former Alabama signee, a consensus four-star prospect in the 2023 class and the No. 14 tight end in the cycle. He picked Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide over a long list of Power 4 offers that included Tennessee, Ohio State, Auburn, LSU, Michigan and others. But after a redshirt true freshman season and a quiet 2024 at Alabama - just 28 snaps over five games, with one catch for five yards against Mercer - he moved on to Boston College.

His stop there was limited, too. Lockwood played in all 12 games for the Eagles last season, but mostly on special teams and as a reserve tight end, finishing with two catches for 30 yards. So when he landed at Arkansas through the portal this offseason, the fit was intriguing, even if the role was still unclear.

Now, after a lone fall camp with the Razorbacks, that role is coming into focus. Jaden Platt has settled in as the starter at tight end, but Lockwood has carved out real work behind him and in certain short-yardage packages. Arkansas offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey has also leaned into more 12-personnel than the staff had initially used in spring, which puts Platt and Lockwood on the field together more often.

Tight ends coach Morgan Turner said the staff believed there was something to build on from Lockwood’s film, especially in the run game, and that the transfer has only reinforced that since arriving.

"We saw things on film that he could it do," Turner said Tuesday. "It looked like he was physical and all that stuff. It's almost with any transfer, you never know exactly what you're going to get.

"You could do all the background research you want, but until they really get on campus and you start working with them, you don't truly know what you're getting. But he's done a nice job since he's been here and really working hard."

That work showed up again in Arkansas’ first fall camp scrimmage Sunday, when Lockwood reportedly grabbed a pair of 20-yard catches from quarterback KJ Jackson during a two-minute drill. Ryan Silverfield also singled him out as a player who has stood out lately.

"A name I haven't mentioned is Ty Lockwood. He's really done a nice job," Silverfield said.

"Everybody knows Jaden Platt is our tight end. We talked about Lassiter's injury.

But Ty Lockwood, I mean, he just continues to make some exceptional catches out there. Does a good job in the run game."

Lockwood’s reputation has long started with his blocking, and that remains a clear strength. But Arkansas is also seeing the receiving traits that made him such a coveted recruit in the first place. Turner said his route running and hands have been especially noticeable, and that Lockwood has a way of finding space and getting rewarded for it.

"He's come in and really done a nice job in the run game. He's good with his routes, and the ball just seems to find him," Turner said. "Whether the concept is called for the tight end or somebody else, I mean, he'll get open and the ball finds his way.

"But it's been good seeing him be reliable in the run game. That's a big thing too.

He's done a nice job. Focused on the technique.

He's got good feet, good hands, and I've been proud of him to see how he's come in and done that."

Arkansas returned to practice Tuesday morning for its 11th fall session and is scheduled to go again Wednesday morning for Day 12. The Razorbacks have 14 practices left before opening the season against North Alabama on Sept. 5 at 3:15 p.m. CDT on SEC Network.

Ryan Silverfield Is Setting An Early Standard Arkansas Fans Will Notice

The first day of classes did not pass quietly for Arkansas football under Ryan Silverfield. The Razorbacks new head coach made a point of personally checking on his players classroom attendance and even where they were sitting, a small but telling detail that underscored how quickly he wants the standard set in Fayetteville. For a roster going through significant change, it was a clear signal that the expectations extend well beyond what happens on the field.

Silverfield has long treated academics as part of the job description, and his track record at Memphis showed it. His program there earned strong marks in graduation rates and community service, and he has carried that same emphasis into Arkansas. For fans trying to gauge what kind of tone he will bring to the program, this was an early look at a coach intent on accountability from day one. [Read more 🡒]

Arkansas Quarterback Battle Is Starting To Shape Silverfields First Season

Fall camp has already started to give Arkansas a better sense of what Ryan Silverfields first team might look like, and the quarterback room is drawing the most attention. The projected depth chart is still fluid, but the early practices and scrimmages have offered enough clues to show how the competition is taking shape as the Razorbacks sort through options at the sports most important spot.

Around that battle, other parts of the roster are beginning to settle in more naturally, with competition still running through running back, wide receiver and the defensive line. It is still early enough that nothing is official, but the observations from camp are starting to build a picture of where Arkansas has clarity and where the new staff is still waiting for one player to separate from the pack. Arkansas Still Has Two Huge Camp Questions As Opener Nears

Fall camp has kept Arkansas busy with little time for comfort, and the biggest reason is still the same one that hovered over the offseason: the quarterback battle. KJ Jackson and AJ Hill have both had their moments as the Razorbacks work through a demanding camp under Sam Pittman, one focused on installing new schemes and building depth after significant roster turnover. A recent scrimmage offered a glimpse of how close the race remains, with both quarterbacks helping move the offense.

The rest of the roster picture has not made things any easier. Arkansas is already adjusting to the loss of tight end Maddox Lassiter for the season after surgery, while running back Sutton Smith has been sidelined by a lower-leg issue. With the opener drawing closer, the Razorbacks still have major answers to find, and the way this camp sorts out the depth chart could shape how quickly the offense settles in once the games begin.
