Arkansas May Have A New Backfield Name Fans Need To Watch

Arkansas running back Markeylin Batton is turning heads during fall camp with his explosive plays and potential to become a key player for the Razorbacks.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Markeylin Batton is making a case for himself in Arkansas’ running back room, and both of the Razorbacks’ top voices on the position have taken notice.

Running backs coach David “YAC” Johnson said Wednesday afternoon that the redshirt freshman has handled his opportunities the right way and flashed the kind of traits that can separate a back from the pack.

“I think Key has done a good job accepting his role, taking advantage of every opportunity he gets,” Coach Johnson said, “He's really explosive with the ball in his hands and he's been showing a lot of toughness. You know even in pass protection, that was one of the things I was worried about a little early on, but he's been doing a great job on that.”

Coach Ryan Silverfield also pointed to Batton after the team’s first scrimmage on Sunday, saying the young back made his presence felt.

“Markeylin Batton actually stepped up and did some good things,” Silverfield said. “He's No.25 for us in the running back room.”

Batton arrives with a strong résumé. The former 4-star recruit from Atlanta, Texas, joined Arkansas as part of the 2025 recruiting class after piling up 2,217 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns with the Rabbits. He also added 817 receiving yards and 11 more scores as a pass catcher.

He enters a crowded backfield, though, with Sutton Smith and Braylen Russell sitting ahead of him. Smith transferred in from Memphis and is expected to help younger backs settle into the new offense, and he already knows the Cramsey system from his time with the Tigers.

Arkansas has also added more talent around the room. Sophomore Jasper Parker came in from Michigan, while 4-star recruit TJ Hodges joined the 2026 class. The Razorbacks also kept sophomore Cam Settles, who has been active in the rotation this offseason and is pushing for snaps behind Russell and Smith.

That depth makes Batton’s climb tougher, but his skill set fits what Arkansas is trying to do. The Cramsey offense leans on adaptability and flexibility based on what the defense gives, and Batton’s versatility gives him a real chance to grow into that role.

He’s also connected to Arkansas football history in his own family. Batton is the nephew of Jason Peters, and he’s aiming to carve out a place of his own in the Razorbacks’ backfield.

He may not see heavy action this season, but his camp has already offered a glimpse of what Arkansas might have in the future if his development keeps trending up.

Ryan Silverfield Is Setting An Early Standard Arkansas Fans Will Notice

The first day of classes did not pass quietly for Arkansas football under Ryan Silverfield. The Razorbacks new head coach made a point of personally checking on his players classroom attendance and even where they were sitting, a small but telling detail that underscored how quickly he wants the standard set in Fayetteville. For a roster going through significant change, it was a clear signal that the expectations extend well beyond what happens on the field.

Silverfield has long treated academics as part of the job description, and his track record at Memphis showed it. His program there earned strong marks in graduation rates and community service, and he has carried that same emphasis into Arkansas. For fans trying to gauge what kind of tone he will bring to the program, this was an early look at a coach intent on accountability from day one. [Read more 🡒]

Arkansas Quarterback Battle Is Starting To Shape Silverfields First Season

Fall camp has already started to give Arkansas a better sense of what Ryan Silverfields first team might look like, and the quarterback room is drawing the most attention. The projected depth chart is still fluid, but the early practices and scrimmages have offered enough clues to show how the competition is taking shape as the Razorbacks sort through options at the sports most important spot.

Around that battle, other parts of the roster are beginning to settle in more naturally, with competition still running through running back, wide receiver and the defensive line. It is still early enough that nothing is official, but the observations from camp are starting to build a picture of where Arkansas has clarity and where the new staff is still waiting for one player to separate from the pack. Arkansas Still Has Two Huge Camp Questions As Opener Nears

Fall camp has kept Arkansas busy with little time for comfort, and the biggest reason is still the same one that hovered over the offseason: the quarterback battle. KJ Jackson and AJ Hill have both had their moments as the Razorbacks work through a demanding camp under Sam Pittman, one focused on installing new schemes and building depth after significant roster turnover. A recent scrimmage offered a glimpse of how close the race remains, with both quarterbacks helping move the offense.

The rest of the roster picture has not made things any easier. Arkansas is already adjusting to the loss of tight end Maddox Lassiter for the season after surgery, while running back Sutton Smith has been sidelined by a lower-leg issue. With the opener drawing closer, the Razorbacks still have major answers to find, and the way this camp sorts out the depth chart could shape how quickly the offense settles in once the games begin.
