John Calipari just got a major boost for Arkansas, and it has nothing to do with the 2027 recruiting class.
Forward Miikka Muurinen is eligible to play this season for the Razorbacks, a school spokesman confirmed. The freshman, who played last season at Partizan KK, is cleared to compete during the 2026-27 season.
That matters because Muurinen isn’t just another body on the roster. He’s one of the players Arkansas is counting on to bring a different kind of juice, especially with his elite athleticism. If Calipari can keep developing the skill side of his game, the Razorbacks could end up with a real difference-maker.
Muurinen’s path to Fayetteville included a frustrating stretch in Europe, where he reportedly wasn’t getting the minutes he should have as a teenager. He then broke through in FIBA play, which helped set up his move to college basketball. After Arkansas added him to the roster, the NCAA finally cleared him following a long fight.

Right now, NBA Draft on SI has only two Razorbacks projected as first-round picks in the 2027 NBA Draft: Jordan Smith Jr. and Billy Richmond III. Smith has a chance to go first overall, while Richmond has the kind of upside that could push him into the lottery. Muurinen now has a chance to join that group and work his way into first-round territory himself.
There’s plenty of upside here. He’s already viewed as one of the most gifted athletes in the world at his position, the kind of player NBA teams would love to stash in the second round and develop on a two-way deal. But if his game keeps sharpening, the ceiling gets a lot higher than that.
He could also choose to stay another season and keep building his profile. That possibility creates an interesting ripple effect for Arkansas and its 2027 recruiting push.
The Razorbacks are still battling for five-star forward Demarcus Henry, and Beckham Black is set for an official visit when the football program faces Tulsa. Muurinen’s decision could help Arkansas with some prospects and make others think twice, especially forwards who want a clearer path to playing time.
