Arkansas Is Waiting On A Recruiting Test Calipari May Not Win

As Arkansas battles it out with North Carolina for top recruit DeMarcus Henry, the college basketball landscape braces for a decision that could shift the balance of power in the 2027 class.

John Calipari may be waiting only a few more hours to find out whether Arkansas has its first commitment in the 2027 class, but the edge in this race appears to have shifted hard toward North Carolina.

Demarcus Henry has been built up as the kind of forward who fits right into the modern NBA mold, and landing him would rank as one of Calipari’s stronger Arkansas hauls in recent seasons. But the Razorbacks now face a real uphill fight for the five-star prospect.

North Carolina, under new head coach Mike Malone, has made the loudest push. Malone, a 2023 NBA champion, has not exactly played things close to the vest in the pursuit of Henry.

The biggest swing factor is reportedly the NIL offer, with rumors suggesting the Tar Heels put more on the table than Arkansas. If true, that would place Henry in rare company financially, with a package that could rival or top what some NBA rookies make.

Then there’s the other piece of the pitch: a rumored Jordan shoe deal. That kind of opportunity would carry obvious appeal for a player with Henry’s profile. And North Carolina also pulled off a major move during his visit when Michael Jordan called Henry personally.

That phone call, by itself, tells you how seriously UNC is treating this recruitment. It’s the sort of card a program only plays when it believes the player is worth the full force of its backing.

For Arkansas, this one looked different not long ago. The Razorbacks had been seen as the team with momentum, but Malone and North Carolina have clearly changed the feel of the battle. Calipari still has a path, but after Henry’s Chapel Hill visit, it looks narrow.

Even if Arkansas misses on Henry, there’s still plenty left on the board. Beckham Black and CJ Rosser remain names worth tracking. According to reports from 247Sports, Arkansas is the favorite for Black, and he could sign during the early signing period.

Rosser is a longer play. He plans to wait until spring before signing, which keeps that recruitment wide open. His connection to Black matters too, since the two played together and that could give Calipari another angle.

There’s also 2028 five-star Evan Willis, who has been the subject of chatter as a possible reclassification candidate to the 2027 class. If that happens, Arkansas could again be in position to land another major piece.

So while the Razorbacks have come up short on several top targets, this doesn’t read like a program that has suddenly lost its footing. Calipari has his own line in the sand when it comes to spending, and he’s not expected to simply outbid everybody.

The likeliest outcome here is Henry ending up at North Carolina, with Arkansas turning its focus to Black and Rosser next.

Arkansas Gets A Big Chance With Rising QB Target This Weekend

A familiar recruiting visitor is back in Fayetteville this weekend, and this one carries real long-term intrigue for Arkansas. KJ Henry, the 4-star quarterback from Norman North in Oklahoma, is expected to watch the Razorbacks take on Missouri after already making an unofficial visit to an Arkansas game earlier in the process. He sits 16th among quarterbacks in the 2028 class on 247Sports, and Arkansas is one of several programs that have already extended scholarship offers.

For the Razorbacks, the chance to host Henry again comes at a useful moment, especially with his profile continuing to rise. The offseason brought noticeable gains in weight, physicality and running ability, traits that have helped push him further onto the radar as one of the more interesting young quarterbacks in the country. A return trip like this gives Arkansas another chance to make itself part of the conversation before the race gets even more crowded. [Read more 🡒]

Penny Hardaway Just Framed Arkansas As A Much Bigger Threat

Arkansas left Memphis with a 93-81 win and a reminder that the Razorbacks may be viewed differently inside the sport than they are in the rankings. Five Arkansas players finished in double figures, a balanced showing that fit the kind of depth and energy John Calipari has been trying to build early in the season. Even in a road atmosphere, the Razorbacks looked like a group capable of making noise beyond a standard nonconference result.

Penny Hardaway added to that buzz afterward by calling Arkansas a top-five team despite its No. 12 ranking, pointing to the Razorbacks youth as part of the reason they have not climbed higher yet. Calipari, meanwhile, returned the compliment by speaking highly of Memphis and saying the Tigers should contend for their league title. For Arkansas, it is the sort of win that travels well, and the kind of postgame praise that suggests the conversation around this team may be changing fast. [Read more 🡒]

Arkansas Showed The Identity Calipari Needs Before Games Start

Before the regular season even starts, Arkansas is already showing John Calipari the kind of identity he wants this team to build around. In a preseason exhibition win over Memphis, the Razorbacks leaned on defense, forced 15 turnovers and turned those miscues into 26 points, a sign that their athleticism can do more than just create highlights.

Calipari and his players pointed to the defensive growth as a key takeaway, and that matters with UAPB up next in the opener. Arkansas still has plenty to sort out before the games count, but the early signs suggest the Razorbacks can play with the kind of pressure and energy that travels well once the schedule gets real.
