Arkansas Hits Halftime With One Big Problem Still Threatening This Game

The ongoing SEC clash sees Arkansas and Vanderbilt deadlocked, spotlighting Arkansas' offensive struggles and defense-driven opportunities.

Vanderbilt and Arkansas went to halftime deadlocked at 14, with the Razorbacks needing a late push to pull even just before the break. Arkansas marched down the field and tied it with 38 seconds left in the half, keeping both teams in search of their first SEC win of the season.

For Arkansas, the most encouraging development over the past two weeks had been the ground game. That edge showed up against Texas A&M and Tennessee, especially in the third quarter last week, but it was missing for much of the first half against Vanderbilt. Sutton Smith did not play in the opening half, and Braylen Russell was limited to 17 rushing yards on seven carries.

Cam Settles gave Arkansas a spark anyway. He ran three times for 23 yards and finished the drive that sent the teams into halftime tied at 14.

Special teams also stayed in the spotlight after Ryan Silverfield openly criticized punter Gavin Rush earlier in the week. Rush’s first-half numbers did little to quiet that concern.

His third punt of the night came from the Vanderbilt 42 and traveled only 22 yards, failing to flip the field the way Arkansas wanted. By halftime, his three punts had covered just 96 yards total, an average of 32.0 yards per kick.

Arkansas’ defense made a major play after the offense stalled out early. The Razorbacks went three drives without scoring, then the defense answered with points of its own. Joker Johnson picked off a Jared Curtis pass and returned it for a touchdown to knot the game at 7-7.

That takeaway matters, too. Arkansas won the turnover battle for the first time all season last week against Tennessee, and it was already ahead 1-0 in that category on Saturday.

Arkansas Looks Loaded But This Early Test Will Say Everything

Arkansas enters John Caliparis third season with the kind of roster that naturally invites big expectations, thanks to the arrival of freshman Miikka Muurinen and transfers Cooper Bowser and Jeremiah Wilkinson. The depth looks real, the talent looks obvious, and Calipari has leaned into that by putting together a non-conference schedule that will force this group to grow up fast before SEC play ever begins.

Virginia, Michigan State, Arizona, Indiana and North Carolina are all waiting on the other side of that early stretch, and the Razorbacks will learn plenty about themselves long before the conference grind starts. For a team with upside and plenty of new pieces, the question is not whether the ceiling exists, but how quickly Arkansas can reach it when the first true test arrives. [Read more 🡒]

Arkansas Finally Gave Fans A Reason To Believe In Ryan Silverfield

After a long stretch of frustration in league play, Arkansas finally found something it has been chasing for months in Nashville. The Razorbacks beat Vanderbilt 31-21 to snap a 14-game SEC losing streak and deliver Ryan Silverfield his first conference win in his first season on the job, a result that gave a weary fan base a real reason to start believing the rebuild might be taking hold.

Cam Settles helped tilt the game with a touchdown run, Miguel Mitchell supplied an interception on defense and KJ Jackson steadied the offense through the air. Just as important for Arkansas, the win came on the road for the first time in SEC play since October 2024 and marked its first victory against a Power Four opponent since the 2024 Liberty Bowl, leaving Silverfield with a long-awaited breakthrough and a little momentum to protect. Arkansas Has One More Shot At Much Needed SEC Relief

Arkansas heads into the Vanderbilt game with the kind of SEC losing streak that has turned every conference weekend into a grind, and the matchup now offers one more chance to interrupt it. The Razorbacks have been here before, too, finding relief in 2014 and again in 2020 when a single conference win snapped a long drought and gave the program something tangible to cling to.

Vanderbilt brings its own struggle into the game, which at least creates a path for Arkansas to leave with a result that would matter well beyond the standings. A win would not answer every larger question around the program or the administration, but it would give players and fans a needed breather, even if only for a week, from a streak that has worn on everyone involved.
