Arkansas needed a clean answer after last week’s loss to Georgia, and Saturday night in Fayetteville gave it one. The Razorbacks snapped into place on both sides of the ball and rolled past Tulsa 34-6, a result built on a breakout performance from KJ Jackson, a monster night from Jalen Marshall, and a defense that smothered the Golden Hurricane from start to finish.
The win also gave Arkansas its first victory over an FBS opponent since last September, when the Razorbacks beat Arkansas State 56-14 at War Memorial. More than that, it offered a much-needed reset for a team that had been searching for traction early in the season.
Marshall has quickly become the name that stands out in the receiver room. The Boise State transfer followed up last week’s 7-catch, 136-yard outing with an even bigger performance against Tulsa, finishing with 9 receptions for 195 yards and his first touchdown as a Razorback on a 20-yard grab. It was the kind of game that made his rise impossible to ignore, and it came just a week before Arkansas heads to Kyle Field to face Texas A&M, where Marshall committed in 2021 before being dismissed from the team.
Jackson delivered the kind of outing Arkansas had been waiting for. The southpaw looked more settled and more decisive, completing 24 of 36 passes for a career-best 309 yards and a touchdown.
He didn’t just win with his arm, either. Jackson kept plays alive, added two rushing scores, and finished with 29 rushing yards.
There were still a couple of rough edges - an interception and some overthrows showed up along the way - but he settled in and made enough big plays to keep the offense moving.
That was a welcome sight for Razorback fans after Jackson had struggled through the first three games. It also came after Arkansas had been splitting quarterback snaps between Jackson and Memphis transfer AJ Hill following Hill’s uneven start.
Even with the offense finding its rhythm, the defense set the tone for the night. Tulsa entered with the No. 32 rushing attack in the country, but Arkansas held the Golden Hurricane to just 65 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground.
The Razorbacks also forced two turnovers, doubling their season total. Ben Bogle recovered a fumble after Antonio Sandel-Bascomb knocked it loose, and Shelton Lewis forced and recovered another one down the sideline in the second half.
Christian Harrison led the defense with eight tackles and a pass breakup. Bogle and fellow FCS transfer Ja'Quavion Smith combined for 12 tackles, a tackle for loss, and a sack in the win.
For Arkansas, this had the feel of a game that simply had to be won. A loss to Tulsa would have landed hard on Ryan Silverfield’s rebuild, especially with the Razorbacks heading into their first SEC road game next week at Texas A&M. Instead, Arkansas gets to carry momentum into College Station and see if it can turn one strong night into something bigger.
