Arkansas’ season opener will come and go without the Razorbacks’ most literal symbol in the building.
Tusk VII, the program’s live mascot, was set for his game-day debut Saturday against North Alabama, but a veterinarian advised against the trip because of the heat. The mascot addressed the decision on his official account Saturday morning, writing, “Looks like Razorback Nation will have to wait a little longer for my game day debut!” and “At the advice of my veterinarian, I’ll be sitting out today’s game due to the heat.”
That call landed in the middle of a brutal weather setup in Fayetteville. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the area from noon until 7 p.m. CT Saturday, with temperatures projected to reach about 102 degrees and heat-index readings possibly climbing to 107.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. local time at Razorback Stadium, right in the heart of the advisory. It’s also the first game of Ryan Silverfield’s time as Arkansas’ head coach, and the first time the Razorbacks and Lions have met. North Alabama competes in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Tusk VII is the latest in Arkansas’ live-mascot line, and his background already carries the kind of detail Razorback fans know well. He was born Sept. 17, 2025, in Dardanelle, Ark., weighing 2 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 12 inches long. He is the son of Tusk VI, spent his first year at the Stokes Family Farm in Dardanelle, and then took over mascot duties in 2026.
The numbered lineage goes back to 1997, when Tusk I was chosen as Arkansas’ live mascot. Since then, the Stokes family has raised and cared for the mascots, with the current Tusk living at the family farm near Dardanelle.
