Arkansas’ quarterback shuffle didn’t just fail against Georgia. It became the clearest sign yet that Ryan Silverfield has a problem on his hands three games into his tenure.
The Razorbacks went into Saturday’s meeting with the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs already carrying the weight of back-to-back blowout losses, and the mood around the program was ugly before kickoff. By the time Georgia had turned the game into a runaway, the empty seats, the paper bags, and the frustration all told the same story: this was more than a bad loss.
Silverfield kept searching for answers under center, but the rotation between KJ Jackson and AJ Hill never gave Arkansas any rhythm. Jackson started, Hill came in on the third possession, and the two kept trading snaps as the Razorbacks tried to find a spark that never arrived. Arkansas was down 21-3 at halftime and 31-3 before the third quarter ended.
Jackson finished 20-for-27 for 212 yards. Hill went 8-for-14 for 76 yards.
Jackson also threw the lone Arkansas turnover, a third-quarter strip sack, but he still clearly gave the Razorbacks more through the air than Hill did. The difference was hard to miss: Jackson completed nearly 75% of his throws and led all three Arkansas scoring drives, while Hill never really threatened Georgia’s defense.
The bigger issue, though, was that quarterback play wasn’t even the only thing going wrong.
Arkansas managed just 305 total yards and only 17 rushing yards on 28 attempts. Georgia outrushed the Razorbacks 254-17, piled up four sacks, blocked a punt, and didn’t allow Arkansas to score a touchdown until the Bulldogs were already up 38-3 and rotating in defensive reserves. Tim Cramsey’s offense looked disjointed all afternoon, including a double pass to Hill that stood out for all the wrong reasons.
Chris Marshall was one of the few bright spots for Arkansas, finishing with seven catches for 104 yards and flashing the talent that once made him a five-star recruit. But even that wasn’t enough to change the larger picture.
Arkansas has now lost 12 straight games to FBS opponents and 12 straight SEC games. That’s the backdrop for a fan base that is already showing its anger in public, and for a coach who is still trying to convince people to trust the process.
After the Utah loss, Silverfield said he would become concerned "if that process was no longer being trusted," while pushing back against people already trying to write his coaching "obituary."
Three games in, nobody needs to do that yet. But with Arkansas sitting at 1-2 and coming off consecutive losses by a combined 61 points, Silverfield badly needs something that looks like progress. Without it, the noise around his job will only get louder.
