Tommy Lloyd, a standout figure in college basketball coaching, has solidified his position with the Arizona Wildcats through a lucrative contract extension. This deal, signed in April 2025, extends his tenure through the 2029-30 season and boosts his annual compensation to around $4.4 million.
Additionally, Lloyd will receive $700,000 for extra duties in the first two years, with this amount increasing by $250,000 each subsequent year. A significant $2 million retention bonus is also part of the package, rewarding him for staying in good standing as of April 1, 2028.
Under Lloyd's leadership, Arizona has been a powerhouse, finishing the 2025-26 season as the last major undefeated team in college basketball with a 34-2 record. They're now gearing up for a Sweet 16 showdown against John Calipari's Arkansas squad. Over the past five seasons, Lloyd has guided the Wildcats to a remarkable 146-35 record, making him a hot commodity for other high-profile coaching positions.
The terms of Lloyd's contract buyout reflect his value to the program. Should he choose to leave for another college job, Arizona would require $11 million if he departs before April 15, 2026.
This buyout decreases annually, dropping to $9 million before March 31, 2027, $6 million before March 31, 2028, and $3 million before March 31, 2029. If Arizona were to fire Lloyd without cause, he would be entitled to the full remaining value of his contract, approximately $25.5 million as of April 1, 2026.
Arizona's athletic director, Desireé Reed-Francois, expressed confidence in Lloyd's leadership, emphasizing his ability to guide the program both on and off the court. She highlighted his success in ensuring the academic achievements of student-athletes and recruiting individuals of strong character. With Lloyd at the helm, Arizona's storied men's basketball program is poised for continued success.
