Taye Brown Is Becoming Arizonas Biggest Problem For Iowa State

Deck: As Iowa State prepares for its pivotal clash against Arizona, all eyes will be on the Wildcats' formidable linebacker, Taye Brown, whose defensive prowess could pose a significant challenge.

Iowa State heads west this weekend for a Week 8 road matchup with No. 25 Arizona, and the Cyclones will have to keep a close eye on the Wildcats’ most dangerous defensive piece.

Arizona enters the game at 5-1, with wins over Cincinnati, West Virginia, Washington State, Northern Illinois, and Northern Arizona. The Wildcats’ lone defeat came on the road against No.

2 BYU by 11 points. Iowa State, meanwhile, is 3-3, with victories over West Virginia, Bowling Green, and Southeast Missouri State.

All three of its losses have come against ranked teams: No. 2 BYU, No.

10 Utah, and No. 15 Iowa.

The player Iowa State has to account for is linebacker Taye Brown, a fourth-year veteran who has steadily grown into the kind of defender who can shape a game from anywhere on the field. As a junior, Brown put up a career-best 93 tackles, adding an interception, a pass deflection, and 1.5 sacks. He’s been the center of that Arizona defense, and this season he’s picked up right where he left off.

Brown has already totaled 39 tackles, along with a pass deflection and 0.5 sacks, which leads the Wildcats by a wide margin. He has also found a way to be involved every week, recording at least three tackles in every game this season. His best outing came in the opener against Northern Arizona, when he finished with 11 tackles.

He’s also shown he can do it against stronger competition. Brown had four tackles against BYU, then followed that with nine against West Virginia and seven against Cincinnati. That production has come against both top-end opponents and lower-profile ones, and it’s part of what makes him such a steady force for Arizona.

Last season, Brown was held to just three tackles against Iowa State, but that game came against a different Cyclones team and a less complete Arizona squad. This version of the Wildcats looks stronger, and Brown remains the defender Iowa State must navigate around.

For the Cyclones, the task is straightforward even if the execution is not: find a way to limit Brown’s influence. That could mean forcing him into coverage or working the ball outside and letting the skill players try to win their matchups. However it happens, Iowa State has to keep him from controlling the flow of the game.

Brown has been one of the Big 12’s top defenders this season, and if Iowa State can’t deal with him, the Cyclones could be in for a long night out west.

Tommy Lloyd Backs RJ Godfrey As Arizona Awaits Crucial Eligibility Fight

RJ Godfreys status is still tangled up in the NCAAs 5-in-5 eligibility fight, and for Arizona, that leaves one of its forwards stuck in limbo as the 2026-27 season approaches. While some players involved in similar lawsuits have gotten their eligibility restored, Godfreys path has been far less straightforward, and the uncertainty has become part of the backdrop around Arizonas roster planning.

Tommy Lloyd has made clear he is in Godfreys corner, along with the other athletes caught up in these disputes, and he has framed the issue as one with a real human cost rather than just a legal technicality. For Arizona, the concern is not only what happens next for Godfrey, but whether the broader eligibility battle finally delivers the clarity players and schools have been waiting for. [Read more 🡒]

Arizona Faces A Real Test With Its Fast Start On The Line

Arizonas fast start has earned real attention, but the next step looks like a true measuring stick. No. 25 Arizona returns home for a Big 12 game against Iowa State with a chance to keep building on its best start in 12 years, and the Wildcats have done it behind Noah Fifitas passing game and a defense that has generally kept them in control of games.

Iowa State brings a different challenge, one that could make this a grind if Arizona is not clean on the details. The Cyclones lean on the run to move the ball, and the matchup may come down to who handles third downs and red-zone chances better, two areas where the contrast between these teams could decide whether Arizonas hot start keeps rolling. Motiejus Krivas Is Giving Arizona Fans Real Title-Run Hype

Motiejus Krivas is already pushing Arizona into the conversation before the 2026-27 season even begins. The Wildcats big man was recognized as a preseason AP All-American, a sign of how much his profile has risen as Arizona reshapes its roster and looks for new leading voices after several departures. With Ivan Kharchenkov also expected to step into a bigger role, the Wildcats have the kind of front-line foundation that can make an exhibition stretch feel more meaningful than usual.

Arizonas next test comes with an upcoming exhibition against Eastern Washington, another chance to see how quickly the new-look rotation is coming together. The buzz around Krivas is about more than preseason recognition, though. His early play has only added to the feeling that Arizona may have a legitimate centerpiece to build around, and the next question is how far that momentum can carry once the games start counting for real.
