Sean Miller’s coaching journey has been nothing short of a thrilling ride, marked by both triumphs and controversies. Sean Miller’s Coaching Stops
Miller has been at the forefront of three college basketball programs since 2004. His journey began at Xavier, where he first took the reins from 2004 to 2009, and then returned from 2022 to 2025. Sandwiched between his Xavier tenures was a stint at Arizona from 2009 to 2021, before he stepped into his current role at Texas in 2025.
Timeline of Sean Miller’s Coaching Career
2004-2009: Xavier
Miller launched his head coaching career at Xavier, stepping up after Thad Matta’s departure to Ohio State. The Musketeers were already on a high, with four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight run in 2004.
Miller kept the momentum going, steering Xavier to the tournament in four out of five seasons. The pinnacle came in the 2007-08 season with a historic 30-win campaign and another Elite Eight appearance.
2010-2021: Arizona
Miller’s tenure at Arizona began amid the challenging transition following Lute Olson’s era. Despite a rocky start, missing the NCAA tournament in two of his first three seasons, Miller soon transformed the Wildcats into a powerhouse.
From 2013 to 2018, Arizona claimed four Pac-12 regular-season titles and three conference tournament championships, consistently securing top seeds in the NCAA tournament. Yet, the elusive Final Four remained out of reach, with heartbreaking Elite Eight exits in 2014 and 2015 against Wisconsin.
Miller’s time at Arizona ended amid controversy, linked to an FBI investigation that led to vacated wins from 2016-18. The Wildcats parted ways with him after missing the NCAA tournament in his final two seasons.
2022-25: Xavier
After a year away from coaching, Miller returned to familiar territory at Xavier. The Musketeers were eager to revive their tournament hopes after a three-year absence.
In his second stint, Miller led Xavier to two NCAA tournaments and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2023. Although his second tenure wasn’t as statistically impressive as his first, it was a solid chapter in his career.
2025-Present: Texas
In 2025, Miller embarked on a new challenge with Texas. The Longhorns, despite some instability, had maintained a streak of five straight NCAA tournament appearances. Miller’s first season was promising, as he guided Texas to a 20-win season, highlighted by a Sweet 16 run after winning a First Four game.
