USC’s pursuit of Trey Wright is moving fast, and that alone says plenty about where the Trojans stand.
The three-star quarterback announced he’ll make his commitment on Saturday, Aug. 15, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett on social media. Wright, who recently picked up an offer from USC, is choosing between the Trojans, Oregon, Arizona, Kentucky, and SMU. With SMU the lone Texas program in his group, the signal is pretty clear that the Texas native is looking beyond home.
The rankings back up why Wright is drawing attention. 247Sports lists him as the No. 52 player in Texas, the No. 48 quarterback in the class of 2028, and the No. 419 prospect nationally.
For USC, the timing matters. Lincoln Riley is known for being selective when he goes after quarterbacks, and he doesn’t hand out offers just to fill space.
He tends to zero in on a short list and push hard on the names he really wants. In Wright’s class, that list appears to be very short.
USC is the only school that has officially offered him, and that offer came on Aug. 8.
A commitment date arriving less than a week later naturally puts USC in a strong position. It also fits the way Riley has approached the quarterback room during his time in Los Angeles.
The Trojans have leaned on the transfer portal for help at quarterback, including Caleb Williams, the former USC quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner. Their current starter also arrived through the portal from UNLV.
USC has also added freshman Jonas Williams, part of the Trojans’ No. 1-ranked 2026 recruiting class, after flipping him from Oregon. The program seems comfortable betting on his development.
Looking ahead to 2027, USC is expected to take a smaller recruiting class, and there is currently no quarterback committed. That could point to confidence in the quarterbacks already on the roster, or it could mean the Trojans will keep looking in the portal once Maiava moves on to the NFL Draft.
Riley’s track record at quarterback has had its misses, too. USC once had a commitment from Julian Lewis before he flipped to Colorado and Deion Sanders. The Trojans then turned to Jonas Williams, though the verdict is still out on both young passers.
And Riley’s first quarterback commit at USC, Malachi Nelson, never worked out in Los Angeles. Nelson eventually moved on to Boise State, then UTEP, and now Syracuse.
Even with that mixed history, Wright stands out as a noteworthy target, and Riley has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to spotting quarterback talent and trying to develop it.

Arizonas tight end room has quietly become one of the more interesting position battles of training camp, and its a credit to the way the group has been built and developed. Tight ends coach Josh Miller has been pleased with the physical growth and overall mindset of his players, and theres a clear blend of experience and upside here. Illinois transfer Cole Rusk has brought a receiving element to the room, while sophomore transfer Shane King is soaking up what the veterans know and adding athleticism of his own.
Tyler Powells presence only makes the picture more crowded. Last years starter has recently been cleared to return after his injury, giving the Wildcats another familiar option to sort through as camp progresses. With Rusk making a strong push as a pass-catching threat and King continuing to develop, Arizona suddenly has a tight end conversation that looks far more compelling than it did at the start of camp.
