Arizona's freshman forward, Ivan Kharchenkov, has been turning heads with his standout performance over the past few weeks. As March rolled in, Kharchenkov's game reached new heights, averaging 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and a steal per game. His shooting has been nothing short of spectacular, boasting a 57.5% field goal percentage and hitting 50% from beyond the arc, with an effective field goal percentage of 75.0%.
Head coach Tommy Lloyd shared insights into Kharchenkov's development during a recent press conference, as the team gears up for their NCAA Tournament second-round clash against Utah State in San Diego.
After a rare scoreless outing against Iowa State, Kharchenkov bounced back with four straight double-digit scoring games. Over the last five matchups, he's elevated his averages to 12.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting an impressive 63.9% from the field and 63.6% on threes, maintaining a 73.6 eFG%.
Kharchenkov has proven to be a key asset for Arizona, showcasing his versatility on the court. Standing at 6'7" and weighing 220 pounds, he can effectively guard multiple positions. His adaptability was on full display when he stepped in at power forward during a game against Houston, filling in for Koa Peat and others who were sidelined or in foul trouble.
Coach Lloyd praised Kharchenkov's impact, noting, "Ivan's been a real game-changer for us all season. He's finding his rhythm offensively and delivering consistent performances, which is invaluable. We knew he had potential, and it's great to see him thriving."
Kharchenkov's ability to shine under pressure was evident when injuries hit the team. With key players like Dwayne Aristode and Peat out in February, Kharchenkov stepped up, averaging 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.8 steals, shooting 43.1% from the field. His standout performance in a crucial win at Houston, where he tallied 16 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, highlighted his fearless nature.
Coach Lloyd emphasized Kharchenkov's high basketball IQ and fearless approach, noting that his instincts have been honed over time. Kharchenkov has embraced the big moments this season, proving he's not just a player for the future, but a critical piece of Arizona's success right now.
