Football season is rolling now, and the Arizona Wildcats are about to open their year Saturday against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. On the recruiting side, the Wildcats already have 18 commitments in the 2027 class, and several of those pledges were in action over the weekend.
Crean Lutheran wideout Braylen Ross was one of the biggest stat-line winners of the bunch. In a 31-10 victory over Mira Costa, Ross caught 10 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown.
For the season, he has 15 catches for 221 yards and two scores. Teammate Ty Johnson was quieter in that same game, finishing with one catch for 11 yards, though he still sits at 11 receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown on the year.
Another Crean Lutheran commit, quarterback Caden Jones, had his name tied to Ross’ big day through the film, with multiple big plays featuring Ross making the catch and the touchdown coming on the final play in Jones’ highlights.
At running back, Wayne Shanks Jr. was listed in Kinkaid’s 28-14 loss to Parish Episcopal, though no stats were available. Even so, there was a red-zone touchdown run on film that showed a nice burst from Shanks.
Curtis Zeno Jr. also had a tough afternoon in Paetow’s 40-21 loss to Langham Creek, but he still flashed with a 15-yard run. His final line: five carries for 22 yards and one catch for two yards.
A few linemen also stood out on film. Mason Joshua of Forney was described as a massive, strong presence who consistently handled his opponent with ease, including a dominant block at the 1:38 mark that wiped his man into the second level and helped spring an easy touchdown run.
Logan Draper of Westfield posted three tackles, a half tackle for loss, a half sack and a fumble recovery in a 16-10 win over Heights, and he looked disruptive throughout the game. James Aloisio’s Snow College game against the Salt Lake Yetis was cancelled after Snow had already beaten Garden City 31-17 on Aug.
On the defensive side, Dieter Lotulelei turned in one of the loudest stat lines of the weekend. In West’s 21-13 win over Archbishop Riordan, he piled up eight tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery.
That pushed his season totals to 13 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery. There was no film available, but the production against one of the better Bay Area teams spoke for itself.
Westfield linebacker Davon Smith added 10 tackles in a 16-10 win over Heights, and the notes pointed to a linebacker who plays with contact and moves unusually well in pass coverage. Springtown linebacker Rome Ewell was busy too, racking up 13 tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack in a 42-20 loss to Brock. The report on Ewell called him an aggressive downhill player who loves contact and shows good vision when tracking the ball.
In the secondary, Fort Worth Christian safety Luke Stevens delivered one of the weekend’s most eye-catching film notes despite his team’s 28-17 loss to Dallas Christian. He showed major burst, chased down a receiver to prevent a touchdown, and later sprinted across the field to make a tackle right at the line of scrimmage.
At cornerback, Crean Lutheran’s Jacob Whitehead had no available stats or film, while Evan Mack was listed alongside him in the Saints’ win over Mira Costa. Westfield safety Jaylen Oliver was also listed, though no game details were included in the report.
