Arizona Wildcats Dominate LIU to Secure Spot in NCAA Tournament Round of 32

Arizona's commanding size and skill overpower LIU, securing a dominant win and a spot in the NCAA tournament's round of 32.

In San Diego, Arizona showed exactly why they're a No. 1 seed, leaving no room for doubt as they dominated Long Island University 92-58 in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Wildcats have consistently overwhelmed their opponents this season, and Friday was no exception.

While other top seeds like Duke and Michigan faced early challenges against their No. 16 seed opponents, Arizona had control from the start. By the first media timeout, they had surged to a 12-2 lead, thanks to a robust interior defense and sharp shooting from beyond the arc.

Arizona's coach, Tommy Lloyd, emphasized the importance of not taking any game for granted, even when the team seems to be cruising.

The Wildcats' physicality was a defining factor, as they imposed their style on LIU, pushing them out to the perimeter. LIU, typically strong in the paint, struggled against Arizona's size, managing only 26 points inside compared to Arizona’s 50. The Wildcats' dominance extended to the free-throw line, with 33 attempts, capitalizing on their aggressive play.

Despite LIU's pre-game comments about Arizona's perceived weakness in 3-point shooting, the Wildcats flipped the script, hitting 6-of-10 from deep in the first half. Brayden Burries was particularly impressive, leading with 18 points, fueled by his hot hand from downtown.

Freshmen Ivan Kharchenkov and Koa Peat also shone brightly. Peat, with his championship pedigree, contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, while Kharchenkov matched his career high with 10 rebounds alongside 14 points. Coach Lloyd praised their maturity and talent, seeing them as key players rather than just freshmen.

On the other side, LIU, under coach Rod Strickland, has made significant strides, transforming from a three-win team to a 24-win squad this season. Strickland expressed pride in his team’s journey, highlighting the lasting impact of their achievements.

Looking ahead, Arizona prepares for a clash with No. 9 seed Utah State in the round of 32. Utah State is coming off an impressive win over Villanova, setting the stage for an exciting matchup. Coach Lloyd and the Wildcats remain focused on their ultimate goals, ready to continue their pursuit in the tournament.
