Arizona Wildcats Shine in Big 12 Tournament Victory
Kansas City, Mo. - The Arizona Wildcats are proving to be the team to beat this college basketball season, sweeping both the Big 12 regular-season and tournament championships. Their latest triumph came with a hard-fought 79-74 victory over the resilient No. 5 Houston.
Arizona, ranked second nationally, showcased their dominance throughout most of the game. However, Houston, never one to back down, mounted an impressive 14-0 run in the second half, slicing Arizona’s lead to just one. This kind of surge against the Wildcats is rare, happening only once before this season in a game against Norfolk State.
But Arizona, led by head coach Tommy Lloyd, didn't let the pressure get to them. After a scoring drought lasting over seven minutes, the Wildcats found their rhythm again. Freshmen stars Ivan Kharchenkov and Brayden Burries stepped up, each banking in crucial jumpers to swing momentum back in Arizona's favor.
Burries and fellow freshman Koa Peat, who both had a tough outing in the previous game against Iowa State, bounced back impressively. Peat was pivotal, controlling the middle and racking up 21 points. Burries was equally clutch, ending Houston’s run with a crafty and-1 play in the paint, finishing with 21 points and three assists.
Houston made it a contest by exploiting matchups, particularly targeting Anthony Dell’Orso. Joseph Tugler was a standout for Houston, achieving a career-high with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wildcats had a scare when Jaden Bradley, the Big 12 Player of the Year, injured his wrist. Fortunately, he returned to the court, much to the relief of Arizona fans.
With this victory, Arizona is likely heading into the NCAA tournament as a No. 1 seed, aiming for their first Final Four appearance since 2001. Meanwhile, Houston, last year's national runner-up, will likely enter as a No. 2 seed, still very much in the hunt for glory.
This win not only solidifies Arizona’s status as a powerhouse but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting March Madness run.
