Arizona wide receiver Caleb Smith picked up the first conference weekly honor of his career on Monday, earning Big 12 Freshman of the Week after another big outing in Arizona’s 34-24 road win over Washington State.
It was the second time this season the Wildcats have landed a weekly Big 12 award, and Smith - better known as “Jet” - was at the center of this one. He finished with 122 all-purpose yards, caught his first career touchdown, and turned in a versatile performance that kept Arizona moving in key moments.
Smith also finished second on the team with 86 receiving yards. His night included a 36-yard punt return, coming on the heels of his 69-yard punt return touchdown from the previous week.
The biggest stretch came in the third quarter, when Arizona’s go-ahead touchdown drive ran through Smith from the first snap to the last. He opened it with a three-yard catch, then followed with a 41-yard acrobatic grab that pushed the Wildcats into Washington State territory before ending the drive with a 38-yard touchdown reception from Noah Fifita.
Smith’s work earned him an 83.0 PFF offensive grade, which was second-best on the team.
"When it comes to slot receivers, they have to be tough and have some fearlessness about them going across the middle and digging out linebackers that are bigger than them and knowing you are going to get hit at times on crossing routes and things of that nature," Arizona offensive coordinator Seth Doege said. "The Jet never shies away. He never hit a freshman wall and just kind of pushed through all that stuff, so that told me he is a bit tougher than most at his age."
