Arizona Is Back In The National Title Conversation Early

Florida leads the preseason AP poll in a captivating start to the 2026-27 college basketball season, while powerhouses like Kentucky and surprises from schools like Vanderbilt add intrigue.

Florida opens the 2026-27 season at the top of the AP preseason poll, and the Gators arrive there with a résumé that convinced voters they belong. They picked up 47 of 59 first-place votes after winning the SEC regular-season title last season and bringing back several pieces from their 2025 national championship team.

Duke sits right behind Florida at No. 2, powered by 10 first-place votes, while Illinois landed the other two and checks in at No. 3.

UConn, which reached the national championship game, is fourth, and Arizona follows at No. 5 after making the Final Four. The early top five reflects just how much last season’s postseason run still shapes the way voters see the sport.

Florida’s ranking, though, comes with a built-in warning. The Gators opened last season at No. 3, dropped out of the poll during a rough stretch, and eventually were knocked out by Iowa in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed.

This year’s group has been through both sides of the experience - the title run and the quick March exit - and that’s a big reason voters put them on top. Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu are back, and Denzel Aberdeen returns after spending last season at Kentucky.

Kentucky has a storyline of its own at No. 23.

The Wildcats are now up to 998 AP poll appearances, leaving them two more from becoming the first program to reach 1,000. Vanderbilt, meanwhile, lands at No. 24 and is back in the preseason Top 25 for the first time since 2015.

BYU rounds out the poll at No. 25.

One notable absence is Purdue. The Boilermakers drew votes, but not enough to stay ranked, ending their streak at 79 straight weeks in the AP Top 25.

Houston now owns the longest active run, according to the AP. Missouri and Nebraska were the top teams outside the rankings, positioned to push into the mix early.

The full preseason AP Top 25 runs from Florida at No. 1 through Vanderbilt at No. 24, with BYU closing the list at No. 25.

Arizona Already Has A New NBA Draft Obsession This Season

The early buzz around Arizonas next NBA pipeline is already loud enough to follow all season, with CBS Sports analyst Adam Finkelstein tabbing three Wildcats as potential first-rounders in the 2027 draft. Freshman guard Caleb Holt is drawing top-five attention, while returner Mo Krivas and newcomer Ivan Kharchenkov are also showing up on the first-round radar based on their scouting outlooks before the season even tips off.

For Arizona, that kind of forecast is the sort of thing that can shape the conversation around every game, practice and lineup choice. Holt arrives with the kind of star-powered upside that gets people talking immediately, Krivas brings the value of a familiar face with a rising profile, and Kharchenkov adds another layer as a versatile piece who could push himself into lottery territory if the pieces fall into place. Arizonas Fast Start Just Raised The Stakes For The Entire Season

Arizonas 5-1 start has put the Wildcats in a position they have not enjoyed in years, with the larger goal now looking less like a slogan and more like a path they can actually chase. The program is trying to echo the success of its 2014 run, when a fast start carried it into the national conversation, and this seasons early momentum has given the fan base reason to think bigger as Homecoming arrives.

Iowa State is next, and the timing matters because the stretch ahead is not easing up. Arizona is already tucked into the middle of the Big 12 race, with Texas Tech and Utah still looming, and every week from here can reshape the outlook. A win Saturday would also lock up bowl eligibility for the second straight season, a basic but important marker as the Wildcats try to turn an encouraging opening into something lasting. Arizona Basketball Opens With Massive Hype And One Big Question

Arizonas preseason profile is as loud as it gets, with a loaded roster and a spotlight game to match. The Wildcats bring back Mo Krivas and Ivan Kharchenkov, then add freshman Caleb Holt and transfers Derek Dixon and RJ Godfrey, giving Tommy Lloyd plenty to work with as the program heads into the 2026-27 season. The opener against UCLA on Nov. 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, set for TNT, already feels like an early measuring stick for a team expected to spend the fall near the top of the sport.

For Arizona, the appeal goes beyond the ranking and the marquee matchup. The mix of returning talent and newcomers gives the Wildcats a deeper, more versatile look, but the early season still comes with one important layer of uncertainty as the roster settles in. In a year when the stakes are high from the start, how that frontcourt puzzle comes together could shape the way this team looks by the time November turns into December. [Read more 🡒]
