Arizona GymCats Stun by Securing NCAA Regionals Spot After Big 12 Setback

Arizona GymCats advance to NCAA Regionals, overcoming a tough Big 12 Championships performance to continue their impressive streak.

The Arizona GymCats faced a challenging time at the Big 12 Championships, but they secured a spot at the NCAA Regionals for the seventh consecutive year. Despite a rocky performance, the team will compete close to home in Tempe against the Arizona State Sun Devils on April 1. The winner advances to face top teams like Florida, California, and Penn State in the regional semifinal.

Even if the GymCats don't advance as a team, standout performers like junior Abigayle Martin, who qualified for all four events, and senior Emma Strom, pending her ankle recovery, will showcase their talents. Strom, who missed recent competitions, aims to make her mark on the floor exercise. Sophomore Jessa Janicke and junior Tirzah Wise also qualified on vault and balance beam, respectively.

Recognition came for Martin and Strom, who earned All-Big 12 honors based on their national qualifying scores. Senior Giana Lenczner, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA in accounting, was named Big 12 Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year, adding to the team's accolades.

Competing close to home might give the GymCats a needed boost, as they’ve struggled on the road this season. Their journey began with a solid floor rotation at the Big 12 Championships, trailing Utah by a mere .050 after the first event. Freshman Delaney Mead stepped in for Strom during senior night and shone brightly, although she couldn't replicate her performance at the championships.

The broadcast of the event didn’t favor Arizona, with limited coverage of their routines. Despite this, Sophie Derr dazzled with a 9.925 on floor, although her performance wasn't fully aired.

As the meet progressed, Arizona faced hurdles, particularly on vault, where their start values capped at 9.95. Denver surged ahead, leaving Arizona trailing Utah by .350. Hopes of a third-place finish faded as difficulties on bars resulted in a fifth-place finish.

Both Mead and Martin encountered significant issues, with Mead scoring a 5.250 and Martin a 9.000 after deductions. Derr managed a 9.800, but overall, the rotation was tough with a score of 47.400.

The GymCats, however, closed strong on balance beam. Lenczner’s 9.775 set a positive tone, followed by Krohnfeldt’s 9.725. Janicke, Derr, Wise, and Martin all delivered impressive performances, with Wise and Martin each scoring 9.900, showcasing their potential when in sync.

Five of the Big 12's teams advanced to regionals, with Iowa State having canceled their season. Alongside Arizona, Utah and Denver will compete in Corvallis, while West Virginia sends individual athletes to Baton Rouge. Despite the challenges, Arizona's resilience and talent promise an exciting regional run.
