Hamilton got its 2026 season off to a smooth start Thursday night, rolling past Brophy Prep 25-6 on the road, but the biggest storyline from the opener was the player who never stepped onto the field.
USC commit Roye Oliver III was in uniform for Hamilton, yet the star receiver did not play. He was on the sideline, but he did not wear shoulder pads or a helmet, and no public explanation had been given before kickoff. There also was no report that he was injured before the game or during warmups, which made his absence stand out even more.
After the win, Hamilton coach Travis Dixon did not address why Oliver was out, and his status remains uncertain going into Week 2. According to Adam Beadle of ArizonaVarsity, Dixon only wanted to talk about the team’s victory and how players stepped into different roles. He said he was pleased with the road win and with the way others filled in, but he had no interest in discussing Oliver’s absence.
That mattered because Hamilton’s offense has often run through Oliver. Still, the Huskies showed they could win without him. They jumped out to a 25-0 lead and controlled the game from there.
The defense and special teams did plenty of the heavy lifting. Hamilton blocked a Brophy field goal at the end of the first half and returned it for a touchdown. Then in the second half, Kacey Allen Jr. picked off a pass and took it 52 yards for another score.
Quarterback Jax Sculley was back after ACL surgery and showed some rust, but Hamilton did not need a big passing night to finish the job. The supporting cast did enough to make the opener comfortable.
Oliver appeared in all 12 games last season and, in the season opener almost exactly a year ago, had seven catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He reclassified to the Class of 2027 in May. This was his first missed game since the start of the 2024 season.
For now, the question hanging over Hamilton is simple: will one of Arizona’s top receivers be back for Week 2? The Huskies’ next opponent is Arbor View of Nevada.

For the Wildcats, the appeal is not just that there are names with NBA traits, but that several of them arrive with enough upside to make next season a meaningful test of who can turn projection into something more concrete.
