Arizona Facing Big Offensive Questions This Spring

As Arizona football gears up for the new season, spring practices reveal both challenges and opportunities as the Wildcats work to strengthen their offensive lineup.

As spring football kicks off in Arizona, the Wildcats are gearing up for a season of transformation and opportunity. With a slew of new faces, including 24 transfers and 13 high school recruits, head coach Brent Brennan is fostering a competitive environment aimed at elevating every player on the roster. The returning players already know the drill, understanding the high expectations set by Brennan and his coaching staff.

Spring practices are a hotbed for position battles, setting the stage for the upcoming 2026 season. Brennan is particularly excited about the new additions, noting that the eight-week offseason has been crucial for integrating these players into the team dynamic.

One of the most intriguing developments is the shift of offensive lineman Rhino Tapa’atoutai from left tackle to guard. With his robust skill set, Tapa’atoutai seems primed for success in his new role, especially with the departure of Chubba Maae. The move could solve a key issue for Arizona’s offensive line.

Tapa’atoutai describes the transition as a faster-paced challenge, but one he's eager to tackle. Meanwhile, the Wildcats still need to address vacancies at center and left tackle, left by Ka’ena Decambra and Ty Buchanan. Prospects like Matthew Lado, Nate Hale, and transfer Zachary Henning are in the mix to fill these roles.

The running back room is also seeing a shake-up. With veterans Kedrick Reescano and Quincy Craig sidelined for spring, younger backs are stepping up.

Wesley Yarbrough, Antwan Roberts, and Cornelius Warren III are all getting a chance to shine. Brennan is enthusiastic about seeing how these players respond to increased reps.

Replacing senior production is another focal point, especially in the wide receiver and tight end groups. Last season’s seniors, who combined for impressive yardage and touchdowns, have moved on, leaving a gap that players like Tre Spivey, Chris Hunter, and Giovanni Richardson aim to fill. Brennan is optimistic, particularly about Brandon Phelps, who has shown significant improvement in the offseason.

The tight end position is also in transition, with hopes pinned on Tyler Powell’s recovery from an injury that sidelined him early last season. Offensive coordinator Seth Doege is eager to see Powell return to form, viewing his comeback as a major boost to the team.

Despite returning talent, Arizona isn’t resting on its laurels, actively utilizing the transfer portal to bolster the roster. As spring progresses, the Wildcats are laying the groundwork for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
