Arizona’s trip to Morgantown comes with a little extra shine in the betting market.
The Wildcats opened as 2.5-point favorites over West Virginia at FanDuel Sportsbook, with the total set at 60.5. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 a.m. MST, and the game will air on TNT Sports.
Arizona is coming off its most complete performance of the season, a 34-7 home win over Cincinnati that marked the team’s first cover of the year. The Wildcats were laying about a touchdown in that one, and while the result didn’t do much to move AP Top 25 voters - Arizona got 19 votes this week - it was enough to nudge the Wildcats into favorite status on the road.
That’s notable considering Arizona is traveling roughly 2,000 miles to face Rich Rodriguez’s team. The Wildcats are 4-1 overall but just 1-4 against the spread, and they had failed to cash in each of their first four games before the Cincinnati win. On the road this season, Arizona has split its two games, losing at BYU and winning at Washington State.
The Wildcats have also already shown they can handle a trip into the eastern time zone as a Big 12 team. They’re 1-1 there, with a loss to UCF in 2024 and the Cincinnati win in 2025.
West Virginia enters at 3-2 after a gut-punch finish at Iowa State, where the Mountaineers fell 45-42. The game stayed tight all day, and West Virginia actually carried a four-point lead into the final five minutes before the Cyclones struck late and then forced a fumble on the next Mountaineers drive.
Before that setback, West Virginia had won three straight to start the season, beating Coastal Carolina, UT Martin and Virginia. Since then, the Mountaineers have dropped their Big 12 opener at home to Oklahoma State and then the game in Ames. They’re 2-2-1 ATS.
The strength of the West Virginia offense is easy to spot. The Mountaineers are averaging 294 rushing yards per game, one of the best marks in the country.
Cam Cook has topped 140 rushing yards in four different games and has six rushing touchdowns. Michael Hawkins Jr. has been just as dangerous with his legs, piling up 11 rushing touchdowns compared with seven through the air, while throwing one interception.
The concern for West Virginia is on the other side of the ball. The defense has been leaking points, giving up 86 across the first two Big 12 games, and it hasn’t matched the “Hard Edge” standard Rich Rod wants from that unit.

Arizona Run Defense Faces Its Biggest Reality Check Yet
Arizonas run defense has already passed one major test. In the 34-7 win over Cincinnati, the Wildcats held one of the nations better rushing attacks to 74 yards, another sign that this group is no longer just holding its own but becoming a real strength. Through the season, Arizona has trimmed opponents to an average of 79 rushing yards per game, a pace that puts this defense among the best run-stopping units in school history.
Now comes the part that will tell the fuller story. The Wildcats have leaned on a heavy rotation under their defensive coordinator to keep legs fresh and pressure steady, and that approach will be under a harsher spotlight against a much more punishing ground game. Arizona has looked the part against quality resistance already, but this matchup will show whether the depth and discipline that carried the day against Cincinnati can hold up when the workload gets heavier and the margin for error shrinks. Arizonas Defensive Front Faces A Much Bigger Test This Week
Arizonas defensive front earned some deserved recognition after helping set the tone in last weeks win over Cincinnati, when the Bearcats were held to 74 rushing yards. The performance drew praise for a unit that has clearly made stopping the run a priority, something head coach Brent Brennan has stressed and linebacker Chase Kennedy pointed to as a key part of securing the victory.
The challenge now gets a lot steeper. West Virginia arrives with one of the nations most productive ground games, and Arizonas front is about to find out whether last weeks breakthrough can carry over against a much bigger test. If the Wildcats can again control the line of scrimmage, it would go a long way toward proving that their recent defensive surge is more than a one-game snapshot. [Read more 🡒]
Arizonas Late-Season Surge Could Set Up A Bowl Shot At Revenge
Arizonas 34-7 win over previously undefeated Cincinnati turned heads in a hurry, mostly because it was built on the kind of formula that travels well in November. The Wildcats leaned on a strong running game and a run defense that held the Bearcats to a season-low 74 rushing yards, a sign that this late-season surge is being powered by more than just one hot afternoon.
Next up is a conference date with West Virginia on TNT, and Arizona still has plenty to sort out before any postseason picture comes into focus. Even so, the Wildcats are tracking toward a bowl appearance that would add another layer of intrigue to the finish, especially with a matchup that would bring back a familiar opponent from last winter.
